His outstanding long-term success as manager of Man. U. is reinforced by the decision to retire on top!

The ability of Ferguson to integrate players from around the world into great teams year after year may never be matched.

Congratulations on your fantastic career!

Did he not say he was retiring a few years ago and then changed his mind?

Just after the 1999 Champions League final he said that he would retire in 2001.

As a Liverpool fan I'm not sorry to see him go but his success record since 1990 has been unreal and he will be a hard act to follow.

The way managers come and go now in football is so stupid, particularly when you think that Fergie nearly got the boot back in the 89/90 because of results but was allowed the time to develop the side. Managers today are never given that luxury.

Along with all the success the man was a petulant bully. He should have walked away from Man. Utd. like Bill Shankly did from Liverpool. Have Man. Utd. forgotten what happened last time a long serving successful manager hung around?

Bet you wouldn't mind a bit of 'Petulant bullying' at Anfield next season, Bernie? Only 2 years to go to equal United's Championship-less record. :)

And the Matt Busby/Wilf mcguinness V Alex Ferguson/David Moyes comparison doesn't really stack up either, IMO. Mcguinness was a totally inexperienced 31 year old given his first managerial job, with an ageing squad that was well past it's best. Moyes is an 11 year Premier League veteran at a big club with no money, despite which he kept them in the top half of the table every season. But he's taking on a young United squad that are reigning Champions. Indeed, they have won 5 of the last 7 Premierships. His only possible 'Achilles Heal' is his relative European experience - again IMO.

So, thanks Sir Alex - the best British manager of his generation. Bully or not. And Good Luck Mr. Moyes - another tough Jock!
