Surprisingly, there is no Holt, Victoria subcat in Literature. How can that be? Didn't find so much as one quiz. She was on my mind because last night I finished her _The Captive_, so wanted to see what FT had. Can't quite believe there's not so much as a single quiz on her books. Well, another project to add to my already lengthy to-do list. Wish I weren't so tired and muddled all the time. Going to take a bit of a rest now.

I ended up not taking a nap, but sketching out a quiz. /shrug/ Maybe I'll sleep better tonight for being tired. That strategy hasn't worked in the past, but there's always a first time.

Victoria Holt! When I read 'The Legend of the Seventh Virgin', I fell in love with the name, Kerensa. When I was pregnant, I floated the idea of using that name if I had a girl. No one liked it... including my husband. My brother still makes fun of me. My daughter is thankful that I listened to the disapproving crowd, and gave her a different name.

I still like the name, and am thinking it might be good for my next cat. (So, there!!)

It is a beautiful name. Some people just don't have any imagination. /grin/

I first read _The Legend of the Seventh Virgin_ and several other Victoria Holt as a teenager, and really enjoyed them. Now rereading and filling in the ones I missed before. They're every bit as enjoyable as they were forty some years ago.

There's a cat and there's a box. Is anyone surprised?

Glad she's O.K.

Good cautionary tale, however... Always check the box immediately before sealing it.

Really! This story could have turned out very badly.

Walking out the backdoor this afternoon, I was enveloped in the scent of lily of the valley. It was wonderful! They are very numerous this year, which explains the strength of the scent. It really refreshes the spirit.

It's quite warm here today. So, I didn't want to wear even lightweight slacks or jeans. Call me a cranky old fusspot, but I refuse to wear shorts before Memorial Day! So, the only option left was a dress. This is the one I chose, in Periwinkle:

M.MAC Rock Fish Mid-Length Dress
link https://www.vermontcountrystore.com/mmac-rock-fish-mid-length-dress/product/79660

As you can see, it's not lined; so, that required finding a half slip. Naturally, the elastic was shot on the one that was the right length. Now, ordinarily, I'd safety pin the top of the half slip to the top of the fancy over-panties but, you guessed it, no safety pins! I ended up using bobby pins. So far, so good. But, really! sometimes getting dressed can be a challenge, even when you select a simple garment!

After breakfast, I went online to order a package of safety pins. A simple task, you say. A quick task, you say. But no!

At first I was only finding medical grade safety pins. Yikes! Eventually the right sort of thing came up and I zapped on over to Amazon to check it out. The reviews on the first one were mixed, half saying the safety pins were sturdy, half that they were flimsy. Same on the second. Well, which do you believe?

So, back to the search engine I went and put in "safety pins made in America". Found one at Ace Hardware, and that also had mixed reviews. Finally, I followed a link for black safety pins at The Boston General Store. No reviews, but the product is made in England, so I'm assuming it's decent quality. I would have preferred silver or gold, but what can you do?

Feel like I've been walking uphill against a headwind. My goodness but seemingly simple things can be difficult!

From the Duh File:

This morning after breakfast, as I do every morning, I went into the front hall and, standing with my back to the stairs, used the call button to called my stair lift. It seemed to be taking a long time, and it didn't sound right*.

Note to self: Lifts of whatever kind don't usually move down when you're pressing the Up button. /sigh/

*Because of the way the lift had to be constructed, an extensor arm lowers itself once the descending chair reaches about the middle of the track from the top, beeping until it hits the floor in full extension. When it's at the bottom the chair, sitting on that fully extended extensor arm, blocks the kitchen door. So, whenever anyone comes down using the lift, they have to get out and send it back up until the arm is completely retracted, to about the middle of the track.

Although the machinery does beep while the arm is retracting, once it is fully retracted the beeping stops so that, from that point, the lift continues to the top sans beeping. Hence, it should have occurred to me sooner than it did that the lack of beeping meant the darn thing was going up instead of coming down. Guess I was a bit spaced out. At least I realized my mistake before the lift got all the way to the top. Thank Heaven for small mercies.

My safety pins arrived on Saturday as did, more interestingly, peppermint straws from The Vermont Country store.

Over the weekend I read a terrific book called "The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches" by Sangu Mandanna. A young witch accepts an unusual job tutoring three little girls who are also witches in a rather unusual house.

I've been listening to a lot of early Donny Osmond on YouTube lately - you can draw your own conclusions as to why that may be. 8) As a result, the logarithms for my YouTube home page have shifted so it now displays episodes from _The Donny & Marie Show_. I just spent a most enjoyable hour watching an episode from 1978 with guest stars Neil Sedaka, Robert Young and the then current Miss America, Susan Something. Isn't that awful, I've forgotten already. Superb, as always. What a terrific series that was. Did you know Robert Young started out as a song and dance man in Vaudeville? I didn't! I'm glad to have YouTube to watch these great shows on.

Rooting around looking for a CD, which still hasn't turned up, I came across _Dr. Who: The Tom Baker Years_...on VHS, which tells you how long ago I acquired it. It was still in the cellophane. I have absolutely no recollection of ever laying eyes on it before. Weird!

Meanwhile, the double album CD reissue including _Portrait of Donny_ must be downstairs in my bedroom, though I thought I'd brought all my Donny and Marie CDs upstairs. I'm too lazy to go look for it. With luck the songwriting info I'm looking for is somewhere on the internet It - doesn't seem to be on Wikipedia, which means actually expending energy googling. The horror! LOL

Got it. That didn't take long. Hurray for Discogs!

In case you wondered, and even if you didn't: The B-side of "Puppy Love" is a song called "Let My People Go" by Helen Lewis and Kay Lewis .

Due to a confluence of circumstances, I missed the May painting. Let's just say I seem to be experiencing cognitive decline issues. :P I am __***VERY***__ irritated at myself about that! However, one must move on. I've taken steps to _try_ to help myself remember that the July painting quiz is, in fact, the July painting quiz.
