I like the renaissance period from Leonardo Da Vinci
to Shakespeare. Before this period the mass of the population are illiterate peasants and as a result you don't hear their voice and their story in the history books - not as individuals. Also their lives were very restricted. They were uneducated, dependent on feudal lords and pretty unanimously religious and of one faith. Any questioning of religion was heresy punishable by death. The renaissance sees a great flowering of the arts, the sciences and changes in society that mean voices are heard from people other than Kings and their courts and nobles. There is a bit more social mobility. Education is beginning to extend beyond the aristocracy. Capitalism is in its origins. The printing press has been invented. There is more individualism and questioning of orthodox religion (the reformation etc) but there is still a lot of mystery. We only see this period imperfectly, It's an exciting period and it's fascinating trying to work out what was really going on. It was dangerous to speak your mind and information is often published anonymously or in a sort of code.

I'd definitely say the Edwardian's and on into the First World War, this whole part of our history is so poignant.
