I've never been to Australia but I have friends who live there and friends who have been there on holiday, and I have friends from Australia who now make Canada their home. When I was seven, a group of Australian airmen stationed in the UK taught me how to sing 'Waltzin' Matilda' and to this day I sing it with a Queenland accent! I find that Australians are, by and large, very laid-back people who live in the moment. It takes a great deal to ruffle their general calm in my experience. Reply #1. Aug 09 09, 2:04 PM |

"I find that Australians are, by and large, very laid-back people who live in the moment. It takes a great deal to ruffle their general calm in my experience." Which leads Cym to a very Aussie comment - 'If they were any more relaxed, they'd be dead!' :D What makes an Aussie different? Maybe being on our Own Island? Being a little away from everyone else? I think we are a diverse mix of people from many places. Our sense of humour is unique - and quite warped! We are happy to join in, make friends, or lend a hand when needed. And possibly the most social lot in the known universe! And we have the Best Place in the World to do it in! :) Reply #2. Aug 11 09, 9:22 PM |

"It takes a great deal to ruffle their general calm in my experience." Yeah, that's easy for them to stay that way when they live with seven of the world's ten deadliest snakes, the funnel web spider, box jellyfish, and the platypus. Reply #3. Aug 11 09, 10:06 PM |

Of course the platypus. Other than it's venom , it can cause pain just by appearing in front of you. Haven't you ever laughed hard when you seen one? lol Reply #5. Aug 11 09, 10:24 PM |

The criminal present is even better! It takes two years just to get your day in court, according to the media. Actually, that should read 'your year in court'. The process is pretty slow. No need to rush these things. Reply #10. Oct 30 09, 5:37 AM |

Having said that, at least we keep our criminals here, instead of sending to some paradise on the other side of the world. Reply #11. Oct 30 09, 5:38 AM |

What makes Australians WHAT ? What makes Aussies mad ? Beer shortages. What makes Aussies happy ? Beer and BBQs. What makes Aussies sad ? Losing at sport. What makes Aussies ecstatic ? Winning at sport (and more beer) Reply #14. Oct 30 09, 6:51 AM |

For me it's their ability to produce three of the most mindless soaps ever seen on British tv-"Neighbours", "Home and Away" and "Cell Block H". Personally, I think it was part of the Aussie's campaign to kill the will to live among the young and thus scupper our future chances at Cricket and Rugby:) Reply #16. Nov 01 09, 10:04 AM |

Skumma, the reason we exported those shows was that no Aussie with an IQ of over 80 would watch them ! And yes, there are a few of us that can cope with laceup shoes. (You know - the old joke about needing an IQ of over 80 to do up shoes laces, and the expat Englishman asking "Is that why so many Aussies wear thongs?" Reply #17. Nov 01 09, 8:04 PM |

What intrigues me about Australia is the unique fauna...and here in snakeless Ireland...thank you St. Paddy ;)...all those venemous creatures, spiders, snakes, ants, box jellyfish...em, well guess white sharks or croc's aren't venemous. Don't know if I'd be able to sleep there! Reply #18. Nov 02 09, 6:55 PM |

Of course one could answer the question "What makes Australians..." with the obvious: Australian parents, but that would be too easy. Reply #19. Nov 02 09, 10:36 PM |
