A council in Northern Ireland is planning to convert a park into a cemetery. The park is next door to a children's hospice. Now, the children can look out onto the park. Soon, they may be forced to look out of the window and see their future. Marks out of ten for crass insensitivity?

There's a petition out!

So far the petition has 5,545 out of 7,500 signatures. Surprisingly few?

Got an email today from the petition organisers.

" Both BBC and Newtownabbey Times report that Newtownabbey Council are having a rethink on cemetery location. At its meeting last Monday ... the Council passed a recommendation to widen the scope of their search for land for a cemetery.

" The Council appear to be on a damage limitation exercise as they are now denying that the Valley Park was ever seriously going to be considered, however that is not the case as documented evidence shows. The Petition has generated much adverse publicity for the Council and its Chief Executive recognised has this, leading to a change of strategy. "

Here's the BBC article:
"Newtownabbey council rethink on cemetery opposite Children's Hospice"
They're allowed to backpedal as much as they want as long as they go and find somewhere else.

Signatures are now 6,115 out of 7,500. Short, but obviously enough!

How refreshing - one person on FT gives a hoot!

The update was in an email from the petition organisers.

It said that, as a result of the petition, and reaction from the local people, the Council advertised for landowners who would be interested in selling their land for cemetery purposes, and has so far had at least seven responses.

The organisers think that most of the councillors were quite shocked at the depth of feeling on this issue.

I am shocked that few or none of the Councillors thought there was anything wrong with the children, and their families, being able to look out of the hospice windows and see a cemetery.

The petition is staying open for the time being because this isn't yet resolved.

Placing a cemetery next to a hospice is devoid of compassion.

I hope the cemetery is placed elsewhere.

What do they read to the kids for bedtime stories, "Godzilla ate Tokyo"?

Lesley, I care. I don't know if I can sign a petition and help in anyway, being from another country. I've been shadowing this thread and my sympathy is on the correct track. Can I sign on or not?

I've only just come across this,Lesley. A childrens hospice next to a cemetery? Pretty well defies belief. What kind of unfeeling git thought that one up?

It's so nice when people join in.

I don't see why being outside Northern Ireland stops you having an opinion.

Bedtime reading - I reckon anything about being buried or walled up would be suitable, and anything by Edgar Allan Poe would be perfect.

Unfeeling, unthinking, and these people want humans to vote for them.

I can see Paul's name at the top of the list of signatures, and the rest are all from the UK. I don't know if this is because nobody else can sign or nobody else wants to - or they have but the names have disappeared. Any ideas, anyone?

I signed leslie, there is an option that the name won't be seen publicly which I used but the signature still counts :)

Thanks for posting, Faye - now we know you don't need to be in Britain to sign.

I have a few aliases and fake addresses up my sleeve. Wonder if I could sign 998 more times.
