I was very shocked to hear about this. Hostess has been around for years & was a part of my childhood, as my parents bought their products. It's a chapter in history that will be gone very soon. How sad. :( Reply #1. Nov 16 12, 11:06 PM |

My son has always been crazy about their Zingers so I bet he's not too happy right now! I haven't talked to him about it yet but I'm sure he will miss those! Reply #3. Nov 17 12, 12:18 AM |

I would have said 'greed' and not from the folks at the bottom. Won't miss anything they sold anyway. Reply #5. Nov 17 12, 12:53 AM |

They'll sell the rights to Twinkies, Ho-Hos, etc. So there will still be Twinkies, even after Hostess shuts down. Don't understand the unions being so obstinate in this economy. If you have a job, you'd better hang on to it! Reply #7. Nov 17 12, 4:21 AM |

I haven't bought any of their products in years as they are so unhealthy. I suspect this may be part of the reason they are closing. Maybe this will be good news for one of our local employers - McKee Foods, makers of Little Debbie snack cakes. Reply #8. Nov 17 12, 7:38 AM |

I doubt seriously as to the closing. I know they have a big plant in Ft.Worth,Tx ( I live NW of there). Yes they have been on strike for some time. I even worked at one of their discount stores and conditions were not good. I was training for Asst. Mgr. They would have you pull your shift (like 1pm to 9pm closing) and clock out. But you weren't thru!! You still had to do all your paperwork And take the deposit to the bank. That meant you were lucky to get home by 11 at night. And going to the bank at that time of night was not cool. However, they are talking about putting the company on the auction block, so I strongly believe someone will snatch it up for nothing and with any real business since could be able to make the company work. But I do side somewhat with the workers cause times maybe bad however you should get paid And have access to health insurance that doesn't take your paycheck away from their own families dinner table. Unions and pension funds will break the backs of most companies in time. I am not so sure it has anything to do with them being unhealthy. The fast food companies fought to have calorie counts on their food but turns out if someone wants a Big Mac bad enough they don't think about the calories. Reply #10. Nov 17 12, 9:31 AM |

Oh I forgot to mention just stock up they last for ever. I dear say that even after a nuclear holocaust I think there will still be the cockroaches and twinkies!! As for unions....i am not in favor of paying someone up front to be able to work and obtain a paycheck!! Reply #11. Nov 17 12, 9:37 AM |

I thought when i grew up I would be a adult and could eat my pie Before my meal if I wanted and eat a burger anytime of day if I wanted. Fast food does not denoted fatfood!! It is merely the way you eat and how much and how much you move thru your day. Genetics are also to play here, yet all those health nuts forget to mention that. Reply #12. Nov 17 12, 9:43 AM |

It is not the fault of the union. Hostess has been bankrupt three times in the last ten years. The workers gave in to a lot of concessions to help the company and in exchange corporate continued in their wasteful ways. The decline of the snack food industry may also have a small part to play as people are trying to eat healthier. That being said my cousin procured some fruit pies for me and I got some donuts for us to put in the freezer. Most of us don't like Twinkies. Reply #14. Nov 17 12, 11:00 AM |

Very interesting comments so far! I didn't know that Hostess had gone bankrupt that many times! I've learned something new today, just by logging into FT! :) Reply #15. Nov 17 12, 12:11 PM |

Why are people always so quick to blame the union. I've done a bit of reading on this and found that only one third of the employees are members of the union in question yet more than 90 percent agreed to strike action. As Rayven has stated this is the third time the company has filed for bankruptcy in recent years and it was discovered in their last court hearing that pay rises as high as 80 percent were agreed to for the company executives last year. Two words...corporate greed. Reply #16. Nov 17 12, 12:51 PM |

This is the reason they cited for filing bankruptcy in January, 2012. The company has been struggling under the weight of an $860 million debt load and soaring expenses tied to its labor force. Hostess has up to 100,000 creditors, chief among them labor unions and pension funds that represent the company’s employees, according to the Chapter 11 petition filed in United States Bankruptcy Court in New York. Of course the company will say that it's the fault of the workers and the union. They aren't going to stand up in court and say "Yes your Honor we're declaring bankruptcy because we're incapable of managing our funds.". Reply #18. Nov 17 12, 4:16 PM |

If one has any doubt where the fault lies, compare corporate executive pay and benefits to what the workers receive. What a wonderful world it would be if the CEO of a struggling company cut his pay in half and reduce his benefits instead of blaming it on the wages and pensions of people who actually *make* the product. Here is another example of Union power. This union could give these four hundred workers affordalbe healthcare. They can afford it, but they may put hundreds of travelers out in the cold on Thanksgiving to get their way. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2234408/Thanksgiving-travel-chaos-looms-thousands-LAX-workers-threaten-strike.html Reply #20.
