Subject: Soon: New reward system and more

If you've been reading the right posts, you may have noticed that we've been busy behind the scenes. In fact, we're working on... big stuff.

While we're not quite ready yet to spill the beans, we'll say this much - a key element will be a new reward system to replace the current level system that has, over the last fifteen years, grown out of balance. Back in 2008, we had like 50 badges and point levels and badge levels were comparable. Level 80 was REALLY a lot.

As it stands now, top players have exceeded 250 levels - and almost all of that is from getting tier 1 on major badges. Almost nothing else matters - point levels are FAR apart once you are above 5 million or so.

Come September (we'll announce the exact date closer to release) this will change. The new system will give points some proper value beyond the first few again, it will reward gaining tiers, authoring, team play and just being active throughout the site. There will also be less of a distinction between minis and full badges - a differentiation we mainly made to keep levels from reaching 600 and above anyway!

Most of the back-end calculations are in place already - meaning you are already being tracked and rewarded for plays in ways you don't know... yet. But if you want to get a head start into the new system on top of what you've already done - gaining some tiers, playing a wide variety of games and authoring quizzes, questions and crosswords can do that.

Our end goal is to make FunTrivia feel a lot more like what it deserves to be: Not a random collection of quizzes and games, but rather ONE game pretty much like an MMO (massively multiplayer online) game- but one where you don't win by grinding character stats but rather where YOUR OWN skills determine your progress and success. All the elements for it have been there for a long time. We'll finally combine them.

(Of course if you prefer, you can keep treating things like a collection like you always did - you will still be able to play quizzes, win an hourly or work towards a GC title. But you can also look at the whole - and play FunTrivia.)

Please note: We're announcing this early so you will know that we're working - and you may occasionally see things briefly not working as they should. If a problem should persist, by all means let us know immediately - major changes on a live system won't come without bugs.

Editors are already using the new system, so we hope to have enough testing to have a smoothly working version on release day that won't interfere with your play experience due to bugs. However, if you're absolutely bent on spending one month on THAT monthly you've been missing for ages and you know it's going to be tight, September might not be the best choice if you're worried about bugs. On the other hand, the transition might make players shift priorities and it could be easier than ever. It could go either way!

I would also like to ask you to not immediately knee-jerk react with a "rubbish" but rather wait until you've played with the new system.

Yes, it's always going to take some adjusting and a few players - those who have exclusively targeted high level by taking one tier of each badge and moving on - may find themselves in a less remarkable position. However if you're one of those players, you will also find ample easy opportunities to boost your tier count before the system goes live - so now is the time and you'll find it rather easy to catch up to your old status once you've harvested what should be ample low-hanging fruit for you!

kkt - we had some stuff running in the background for testing (the exploration prestige) that was reset to 0 for release.

Also, a few rank boundaries changed slightly during implementation when we were doing the move from 22 to 25 main rank names (some up, some down).

It looks like you were affected by both - The 13c to 13d boundary is now 15 points higher than it was in the first setup and you also lost some exploration. Everyone who played during the test phase was affected by that latter part - but you should be able to get those back in a few days.

If it's any consolation to you - I am now working on my next grade for the 4th time, having been hit by all three pre-release recalibrations we made for enough to fall back down each time :)

That was pre-release stuff however . You should not be losing any prestige in the live system.

Quick question
The Epic Fox: The Epic Fox will deliver a free Epic level daily challenge at midnight each night to a player who logged in the previous day of this rank or higher.

Is this awarded just to one player on a random basis (like the LuckyDuck) or does it apply to all players who logged in the day before?

Gumby1967 Post #240 - I totally agree with you, huge congratulations to all involved, it must have been a massive task and I think it's excellent!

I also second your thoughts on Points Today being at the top, after several days of being in tiny print on the left hand side I'm still not used to it and it seems lost there. IMO it would be great to have it at the top as it used to be. Either as you suggest on the left hand side, or there is plenty of space on the top right of the home page, same size as username and team. Please may this be considered?

The Epic Fox and the Prestige Owl will each visit one random player per day whom they consider worthy (i.e. who is of the required rank and has been online the day before).

They are rare, but due to the rank requirement, less rare than the duck.

I see that the author rainbow challenges are now locked behind a specific rank. If I complete one of them, will I have to claim it when I reach the rank?

Actually you never have to claim them. Authoring enough to win any of them will automatically give you the challenge when the quiz goes online - and unlock the rest of the hall!

"Not rewarded automatically" is NOT a good look for a site that wants me as a subscriber. If I am paying to be a Gold Member, then I should be afforded some measure of respect. Chasing down "points" is NOT my idea of a good time! Meh.

What is this specifically in regards to? Some of these are created because it would take the site too much effort to constantly be searching for the parameters to reward badges/badgelets/points on an automatic basis (ie. the site would slow to a crawl if it was doing so for every active player). That said, there's always room to optimize, so if you have a specific we can look from there.

Was looking through the perks and I have a question. On the Word Wizard Mulligan, do we keep any letter we earned on the first try and still potentially earn a second with the mulligan or is it limited to one per hour. (Yes, I know I can try it to find out, but don't necessarily want to use my mulligan yet.)

I have a question about how authoring points are allotted. Do we get one point for each quiz/CW authored? If so, I am missing a point for the most recent of my quizzes that went online (Aug 27), and so are some of my teammates, according to our Prestige Log.

I'm now earning 18 points per correct answer. Good...but it means I'll need to adjust my strategy when I get a twin match challenge. I'd play games until we were separated by a factor of 10, then play quizzes until I was close enough for a few Quick Quiz answers to get me there.

But that may be part of the point? It's a "hard" challenge but the strategy made ie more "medium." This adds some calculation.

No, authoring prestige is on a curve. If you have a large number of quizzes authored, you will hit a point where you only earn a fraction of a point per quiz authored. So it may take 2 submissions to get the full point.
