Subject: Complain about questions in games here

Posted by: Terry
Date: Sep 03 23

I want to hear your whines here. My goal is to have question pools for each game that everyone can enjoy. I think most games we hit the sweet spot, but thought I’d check in to see if we have some room for improvement.

What games do the question pools leave you feeling frustrated or make you not want to return to?

What games have questions that are too difficult?

All gripes are invited, but please be as specific as possible. I need to know the exact game(s) that need question pool tweaks, and the specifics about what types of questions are problematic.

This thread will be locked once sufficient whining has been collected.

Thanks :)

Photo Mania - the questions with the music sheets where we're supposed to identify the song from the notes. Photos don't enlarge well. Sorry, don't have a link to the quizzes but have asked for them to be removed from timed games in the past. Apologies to the author - I'm sure they're great quizzes for the right person but not for timed games or for those of us who are idiots when it comes to reading music.

Obscurity game, all is in the name obscurity :
Obscure questions and ask us the challenge
12/15 280 seconds.
This challenge is impossible for me, too much
Obscure questions.s
Either change 10/15 questions in 280 seconds.
The twin challenge too easy for you will be
Maybe suppressed and in the other maintain
a too hard challenge obscurity 12/15

I keep a good natured rant thread at Cat People, mostly when Mind Melt (my best & favorite game) has 2 answers with the exact same definition.

eg:
Yawn or burp?

innate reflex means "an automatic instinctive unlearned reaction to a stimulus"
unconditioned reflex means "an automatic instinctive unlearned reaction to a stimulus"

Anyhow, as these are automated, it should be programmable to kick out duplicate definitions, maybe?

One thing that I've noticed is that when I send correction notices about errors in questions I've had replies back from the question setter who apologises and says they're not able to change the question.

Would it be practical or even possible for these to go to the editor as well, or at least someone with the power to amend the question text?

They DO go to the editor as well, as long as you send a Correction Note.

That's great. I didn't get anything in the way of response from them so far so I had a feeling they were falling on deaf ears.

Along those lines, I think it would be great to have an option to send correction notices just to the editor and not to the author if we just want the question removed from a question pool.

Overall, I don't have complaints about any specific games, it tends to be with specific questions that are not stand alone. I send correction notices when I run into them and then move on.

Correction notices are a big deal on those because we can work with the author to fix the quiz as a whole-- most quizzes should avoid questions that don't stand alone (BT being an exception).

If that author is long gone or the quiz needs a more substantial overhaul, an editor can then manage it or fast-track an adoption.

I will not play team heroes with any questions about Hinduism or fantasy! Please drop those categories!

Per the original post at the start of the thread, is there a reason behind not wanting these? Is it a personal preference? A matter of difficulty?

Those correction notes for questions that don’t stand alone get cleared very quickly, often the author doesn’t even see them. So please keep sending them, they work well to get the questions removed from the pool.

All correction notes get seen by editors and get dealt with, even if you don’t hear back.

I am generally OK with the questions that appear in games. However, I am not a fan of questions involving calculations (even simple ones) in timed games. In addition, some questions in the Easy Game are way too long for a game with such a stiff time penalty.

For the questions that end up in timed contests, is there a word limit?
Some of these that start : Oh, no, said Pittipot, it would seem that my marmalade has curdled! Is it possible that all this rain we've been having lately has enmeshed us in a web of misunderstanding?
& run on for 3 dense paragraphs, somewhere in there lurking a question of who was the darts champion of the Drunken Heffalump pub in 1987 have their place, but is it really in Who's the Smartest?

Timed games do have a length limit. At least in theory. If a particular game does not seem to be abiding by one I can check to make sure it is selecting correctly.

'I am not a fan of questions involving calculations (even simple ones) in timed games'.

Please send corrections for these. We do reject them (I sent one back only yesterday) in the single question game but there might be some historic ones lurking in there. In quizzes, the timed option is removed but maybe questions do end up in games like Gold Member Madness.
