I'd travel to early 19th century western America and be a gold miner, trapper, or a farmer. I'd love to see the area without all the people. Another place I'd choose is ancient Greece. I could be an Oracle. Or maybe middle ages Europe. That might be fun to see history in action. Of course I'd probably end up someone's scullery maid but I could live with that. Reply #1. Think I'd want to be a sailor during the Age of Discovery - probably would more into navigation and finding new passages versus exploring new lands. I'd let Columbus land at the Americas and not take his holiday awawy from him. Reply #2. Oct 25 07, 12:20 PM |

So many places I would have liked to have been. I'd have liked to witness the dedication of the first Temple of Jerusalem (all that meat, and the music...). I'd have liked to be at the Lower Rhine music festival in 1855 (the peak of Joseph Joachim's composing and conducting career). I'd have liked to be present when the American Declaration of Indepence was signed, at the first concert where Paganini broke a string.... Reply #3. Oct 25 07, 6:34 PM |

There are many eras I would like to visit, but one in particular, which may sound bizarre, is to be a child in 1950's England. As I was born in the '80's, all I've ever known is technology and a decline in morals. I appreciate life would be harder in the '50's, but I would love to see what it was like. Can anyone tell me? I grew up in the 70s/80s too. If you travelled back in time to the 50s then yes I can see how life might seem harder but I don't think it seems like a more difficult time to the people who lived it. Of course there would be a unique perspective with each individual but, here in America (and in the UK I suppose), the 50s are generally seen as an innocent, simpler time. I agree that if my childhood occurred in an era like that, I'd probably have fonder memories of it. Reply #5. Oct 26 07, 11:54 AM |

I'd like to spend some time at the court of Queen Elizabeth I (I'd get to see first-run plays by Shakespeare!), and I'd like to be an aristocrat in Regency England (and read Jane Austen hot off the press). As for being a child in the 1950s in England, I doubt if you'd like, Crazycube. I was a child in the 1940s/50s in UK - everything was rationed, not just during the war but for a long time after the war ended. Greatguggly, I doubt if there was ever an 'Age of Innocence' in the UK in the same way that there was in the US - well, maybe back in the days when Buddicca was queen of the Iceni. You forget that from the 12th century on, Britain was always at war somewhere in Europe or the Middle East (think Crusades) and from the 16th century to the mid-twentieth century she was running a vast empire. We never had a chance to be isolated from the rest of the world in the way that America was. Reply #9. Nov 02 07, 4:30 PM |

Good point, jelly. People generally think of being an ancient landowner or monarch, or a great artist, or a religious leader. They rarely want to be a farm worker or a barefoot beggar. Reply #11. Nov 04 07, 9:41 AM |

I'd like to be a teenager in London in the 1960s. Like Kiwi_Al, I'd go to university, instead of leaving school at 18 and going to work in a stultifying insurance office. Reply #12. Nov 05 07, 7:57 AM |

If you were a teenager in the 1960s I'd be one of the lecherous rock stars you'd most likely be swooning over (; Reply #13. Nov 10 07, 1:25 PM |

Sorry, Greatguggly, I didn't swoon over rock stars, lecherous or not. Although you weren't there, were you? But you might see me in the audience, and you'd be the one swooning. And I'd catch you... Cube, where are you? Hurry up with that time machine! Reply #14. Nov 10 07, 6:37 PM |

I was a teenager in the 1950's. I was in on the beginning of rock and roll. Yes, things were rough back then. I just remember the good things. Life was much more innocent back then. I grew up in the US but I imagine it was the same in England. Although many years have passed, sometimes it feels like yesterday. Reply #15. Nov 10 07, 7:07 PM |

I once had a very real dream about being a young Indian hunter sneaking up on some elk. It took place about a mile from where I lived, but the land that is now agricultural land, was wild overgrown with brush and trees. It was the most real dream I have ever had. I really felt the anticipation of sneaking up to the elk with my bow and arrow. Reply #16. Nov 10 07, 10:35 PM |

Lesley, your post #11 made me chuckle. It reminded me of all those people who believe in reincarnation. They were always Vestal virgins or Egyptian pharaohs, Roman generals or kings and queens or aristocrats of some period or another. They were never the old crone who lived in the third hovel on the left and spent her days emptying slop buckets in the castle kitchen, or the barefoot boy who herded cows or sheep! Reply #17. I wouldn't go that far back, maybe the mid 90's, and assuming that i would know what i know now, would warn my memere about seeing a doctor before it was too late and i would tell my mom that she would be getting cancer and tell her where, so that the doctor's could find it, instead of having her suffer for a long time, because they couldn't find out what was wrong with her (turns out it was kidney cancer). Totally selfish reasons but thats where and what i would do. Reply #18. Dec 02 07, 10:38 AM |

I would love to see ancient Egypt (not be a part of it). I'd like to meet Cleopatra. I'd like to see the Vikings and I would like to see what happened to the lost colony that left the famous tree carving ROANOKE. I'd also like to go back to the 50's when I was a teenager and really enjoy a simpler time. Wish I could take what I know now back with me. I sure would make a lot of different decisions about my life. Reply #19. Dec 02 07, 11:27 AM |
