Punic Wars, even though no accounts from the Carthaginian side survive it was a lot closer than the later propaganda suggested.

Studying war is a good way to learn that human beings never learn!

The Revolutionary War gets my pick as the most interesting war.

I'm fascinated by British history more than American history for some reason. Some of the wars that intrigue me:

The Danish Conquest of England 1016
The Norman Conquest of England 1066
The civil war between Stephen and Matilda 1135-1154
The mythical Trojan War (does that count?)

World War II, because of the politics, the outcomes and the sheer scale of it all!

I cannot see any other war which has shaped the history (and future) of the world as much as WW2.

I am not really interested in studying any war in particular. Military history and individual battles don't really capture my attention. However, the politics and failed attempts at diplomacy in the build up to wars I find very intriguing. My favourite "road to war" has to be WWI. The pure longevity of the hostile relations seen in the Balkans and Russia's suspicion of Austria and Germany and that suspicion returned is quite incredible. In many respects the road to WWI can be suggested to go back to the short sighted Congress of Berlin in 1878, and maybe even before that!

A close second is the Crimean war of the 1850s. I find the build up to the war due to factors such as resolving the Eastern Question and checking Russian expansion thoroughly fascinating. The war itself, couldn't really care!

MJ - Punic Wars - Great call! Perfect example of 'History is always written by the victors'!

However,my personal choice: The Napoleonic Wars and Wellington in India. If Britain wasn't 'tied-up' with the threat to Blighty itself, posed by Bonaparte, what might have happened in North America? Now,there's something to ponder!

Along the lines of jonno's post, another fascinating 'war' - The Cold War.Just think where the world could be now,if the Allied victory in WW11 had been truly 'unifying'. In my view, such a missed opportunity!

Jonno, you'd probably LOVE taking classes with a professor I had for three years. His major life's work is WWI diplomacy and failed peace attempts. Really makes for interesting courses!

So I like studying WWI too, due in large part because of the influence of this professor. I think I like studying wartime society moreso than the actual military history, and even more so than the politics of it, as fascinating as they are.

The Irish war of independence against the English (later British) - started in 1171 and still going on, but in a diplomatic phase since 1994.
