Yes I do. There is so much for me yet to learn. I've always had a soft spot for Native Americans and was surprised to recently learn just how many tribe names there are on a map of the United States with all of them shown. Reply #4. Oct 08 09, 1:57 AM |

It was not covered at school - even British involvement in India. What I have seen since seems interesting - I would realy like the Indus script to be deciphered. Reply #6. Oct 08 09, 5:36 AM |

What little I know of Indian history is fascinating - particularly the Moghul era. It's a sad thing that we don't study the histories of other cultures because school history curricula are so ethnocentric. Knowledge of other cultures and histories would go so far to helping us to respect and understand one another. As for native North Americans, it's high time we stopped calling them Indians. It's a misnomer. Trust a European - in this case, Columbus - to label a people incorrectly! Here in Canada, the aboriginal peoples refer to themselves as First Nations or Aboriginals, by their tribal names (Tlingit, Cree, Miqmah, and so on) or Anishinable. The people formerly known as Eskimoes are more properly called Inuit (eskimo is a Cree word meaning 'raw fish eater' and it is an insult). Reply #7. Oct 10 09, 12:17 PM |

"As for native North Americans, it's high time we stopped calling them Indians." Let's not call them Native Americans either folks. As for Indian history, I know three things. The British owned them, Ghandi did something by not doing anything, and married Indian women have what looks like a giant pimple on their forehead. If you want to talk about Cleveland Indians history, I have more to say. Reply #8. Oct 10 09, 1:40 PM |

priya, Anton wasn't saying that there wasn't more to Indian history - he was just saying that that is all he knows about it. I don't know much more than that myself. As for ethnocentric history curricula, this is mostly true around the world but mine was surprisingly non-British. :S From 11 - 16 years old I studied very limited British history: castles etc. My GCSE was based on 20th century American history, Nazi Germany and Russia 1905ish to 1924. The first time I ever studied British history in any depth was for my A level at 16 to 18 and that was British history 1815-1914. It was OK, but I much prefer the history of other countries. Anton, you sure have a way with words. There have been quite a few threads that you have made what I would consider derogatory remarks about other cultures/creeds. You have already picked on the muslims and now it's the Indians. In the US, why not call the Indians, Native Americans? They were. As for the Indian women wearing what you think are pimples on their forehead, that is just plain offensive to me. Reply #15. Oct 14 09, 5:23 PM |

"As for the Indian women wearing what you think are pimples on their forehead, that is just plain offensive to me." I agree. I hope this is not another topic that will veer off into insanity. (Sigh) Reply #16. Oct 19 09, 3:50 PM |

I guess the 'pimple' thing could be offensive, but I always enjoy Anton's wit. I have never been offended by anything he's said. Shall the rest of the posts not make this into something it's not? Reply #17. Oct 19 09, 10:15 PM |

I too enjoy Anton's wit, but humour shouldn't be a pretext for offensive remarks and Merrymas' and Pagiedamon's remarks are well made. So please let's keep the boundaries around what is funny a little bit clearer. Reply #18. Oct 20 09, 12:59 AM |

There isn't much that offends me and I forget that sometimes. If I offended any Indian person with the 'pimple' remark, I do apologize. Reply #19. Oct 20 09, 1:55 AM |
