Quite big here too..........one programme theorised she sunk because of inferior quality rivets. IMO opinion load of "£$%, no matter HOW "super-duper" rivets used, or even how inferior, no ship has ever been built designed to withstand side-swiping Icebergs at 20 knots plus (except maybe a heavily armoured Battleship, and even then my money would be on the Iceberg)! I heard there was some doubt as to whether an iceberg was really involved and was used as an excuse to cover corrupt dealings with the construction of the ship. I remember the date because my Father was born a few days before the sinking and my mother a few days after. Both would have been 100 this April 2012. Reply #2. Apr 13 12, 1:20 AM |

The Barrier Council Band (trade union musicians) played an anniversary concert in Broken Hill for the musicians who played on while the ship sank. Reply #3. Apr 13 12, 2:45 AM |

Yes, lots of stories and TV shows, some of the documentaries have been rather good. I've just watched "A Night To Remember" again, it's a great film and I always love watching the late Kenneth More doing his stiff upper lip bit! Reply #5. Apr 15 12, 10:38 AM |

I have always been fascinated by the Titanic Musicians that played until the last moments of the ship. To keep up people's morale and spirits. Many people were heroes the night Titanic sank. Some we've read their stories and some we'll never know. Reply #6. Apr 15 12, 12:51 PM |

Mommakat/Paulmallion - I have a family story too, my great grandmother's husband was a merchant seaman and went on the Titanic voyage. Like so many of the crew, he didn't come home. That meant that she remarried and had four more children, one of which was my grandmother. As much as the Titanic was an awful disaster, it kind of worked out for me ;-) Reply #8. A century has already passed. Very hard to believe it's already been that long. Very sad moment in history & I hope the souls that were lost have found their peace. About 15 years ago, a Titanic exhibit was traveling around the country & we went to see it. It was very well put together & very informative. They gave you a little card with the name of a random Titanic passenger on it & at the end you could check to see if your person had survived or perished. I had gotten the name of a third class passenger so of course I found out my person had died. Most third class passengers did. I was kind of upset finding that out. :( Reply #9. Apr 16 12, 12:10 AM |

The unsung heroes as well were the men in the engineroom who kept the lights going until the end even though they knew they were dead men. Reply #10. Apr 19 12, 5:25 AM |

supersal, 'A Night to Remember' was a much better movie, and more factual, than the dreadful but immensely popular epic perpetrated by James Cameron. Reply #11. May 06 12, 9:49 PM |

Cym, have you ever seen the James Cameron movie? The movie was made as a form of entertainment. Some of the events that brought on the sinking of the ship may have been referred to, but the theme of the movie itself was a love story. I hesitated to see it (you know how it's going to end), but thoroughly enjoyed the story. James Cameron's aim was to make a film based on the ship, but he never claimed it to be a source of history. I think you'd like it. Reply #12. May 06 12, 10:44 PM |

One of the saddest Titanic stories I've heard is that of 2-year-old Lorraine Allison. She was travelling in First Class with her mother, Bess, father, Hudson & her baby brother, Trevor. They also had a nanny with them. When Titanic hit the berg, the nanny took Trevor from the cabin without telling his parents. So, unaware that Trevor was safe in a lifeboat, Bess & Hudson searched frantically through the ship. By the time they decided to take Lorraine to a lifeboat it was too late. Lorraine was the only First-Class child who perished. Reply #13. Jul 01 12, 9:39 PM |

Yes, Lorraine Allison's story is very sad. If only the parents knew their son was safe... Watching all these documentaries, I feel like I know the passengers. I can recognise a lot of them in pictures. I like Ruth Becker's story, how she was separated from her family and found them on the Carpathia. And was almost crushed by another lowering lifeboat. The one person who survived and should buy a lottery ticket is Nurse Jessop. She was also on the sister ship Britannic in 1915 when sunk by the germans. Reply #15. Mar 01 13, 8:50 AM |

Caseena, from what I've read, young Miss Becker was very helpful when it came to caring for other survivors while they waited to be rescued. In particular, she helped comfort a distraught mother, 18-year-old Leah Aks, who'd been separated from her 10-month-old baby. Fortunately, the story has a happy ending: shortly after the rescue Leah was reunited with her son & went on to name her 2nd child, a daughter, Sarah Carpathia, after the rescue ship. Reply #18. I saw the Titanic movie descriptived when it came out. Selling things that are found from the Titanic should be given to musemus so we can learn about the past or to somebody that would apreciate history. Reply #19. Apr 14 13, 5:25 AM |

It's finally here. Today in my country it's Monday, April 15th, marking Titanic's 101st anniversary. Here's what I plan to do as a way of remembering those who died: 1. Wear my old 'Titanic' t-shirt. 2. Wear my replica 'Heart of the Ocean' necklace. 3. Watch the 1997 movie. 4. Play the hymn 'Nearer My God To Thee' (often said to be the final song played by Titanic's band). How does anyone else on FunTrivia plan to commemmorate this important day? Reply #20.
