I grew up in the San Juan Islands in Washington State. A most beautiful beach can be found at Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey Island. On one side is Puget Sound and less than one hundred yards to the east is Big Cranberry Lake, freshwater that close to the saltwater! Reply #1. May 06 09, 9:46 PM |

You'd all probably laugh but LA. Smooth, manicured sand from the Bel Air Bay Club all the way down to Torrance, something like 25 miles or so. Long, wide, clean beaches. I've been a lot of places but if you're looking for clean wide open sand, that's hard to beat. Oahu? Where do you think a lot of that sand was imported from? Think about it. Plus, unlike the island beaches a lot of people mention, the sand isn't comprised of small shells, meaning that you don't get corn dogged immediately upon touching the sand. Reply #4. I've been a lot of places but still, as far as nice, clean, long expanses of actual sand, still haven't found anywhere that compares. There are nice tropical beaches out there, no doubt, but if you've ever been there, you'll find that sand is actually micro-shells and it has a bad habit of sticking to you and in orifices that you didn't even think you had. A good shorepound session at Sandy Beach on Oahu will teach you that! :) Reply #6. May 08 09, 5:06 AM |

Schoonie, in the early 1950's my aunt used to come down to the valley and pick me and my brothers and sisters up and take us home with her to Torrance. It used to be a really nice town. I remember us packing a picnic and going to the beach every weekend. It was beautiful. I really like going to Pismo Beach. Most of us in the valley use Pismo Beach and the nearby dunes as a way of escaping the heat of the valley. Reply #9. May 08 09, 8:21 AM |

Three Cliffs Bay, near Pennard on the Gower in South Wales, the long walk down keeps away the families, its a great place to go to walk the dog or spend hours in quiet contemplation, it even has its own mediaeval castle. Reply #11. May 08 09, 5:15 PM |

When I was living in Wales as a child, two of my favourite beaches were the sands at Borth (which is about six miles north of Aberystwyth) and at Barmouth - lovely flat expanses of sand, great for cricket. Nowadays, I live a mere 45 minute drive from one of the most beautiful beaches in Canada - Grand Beach on the eastern side of Lake Winnipeg. Pure white sand for miles and on a hot summer day with the big blue Manitoba sky above, if it wasn't for the pine trees that ring the lake one could almost believe that one was in the Caribbean. Absolutely lovely. Reply #13. May 11 09, 2:36 PM |

Varadero Beach in Cuba is one of the best. Kiawah Island in South Carolina has a nice one. Several in Hawaii of course. Virgin Gorda in BWI. And except for the lack of sand, I like the experience and the sights of the "beach" at Sorrento. I just realized, there are way too many to pick one. Reply #15. May 22 09, 6:08 PM |

Actually, the beaches of Oregon State I have heard about others, such as Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, and others. I would not laugh about the post of L.A. beaches, but having been to Torrance, Redondo, Hermosa, well, they seem so plain, nothing exciting, no real places to go on the beach, pretentious people, etc. I have been to those L.A. beaches about 150 times. I only visited Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for a week in the late 1980's. The beach and weather were wonderful. California has some beautiful beaches but Myrtle Beach has them all beat. Reply #17. Jun 23 10, 6:35 PM |

I have been to Hawaii and the beaches are beautiful, but it is quicker and cheaper to go to Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama. White sand, clean beaches - well, they were before the oil spill. We like to go in December when it isn't blistering hot and so crowded. Reply #20. Jun 23 10, 8:56 PM |
