Obviously, thank-you! What I meant was...... "Why do so many FT players live in UK?" Does that sound better? Reply #2. Aug 01 09, 6:07 PM |

I don't understand it either. I used to live in England and would never have referred to myself as living in the United Kingdom. I expect the members who live in Scotland or Wales are less likely to put UK and I am absolutely sure that those in Noerthern Ireland wouldn't use UK. Patriotism seems to be dead! Reply #3. I may have misunderstood the question. Why shouldn't there be a lot of members there? Reply #4. Aug 01 09, 6:10 PM |

Look, it's not that people living in the UK and who are on this site are bad. The reason that they have UK as a location is obviously, because they live there. Not much reason to lie about what country you live in on here, is there? Reply #5. Aug 01 09, 6:14 PM |

Because most of the places in the UK not a lot of people have heard of. So, when it says UK, we know where they are. Reply #7. Aug 01 09, 6:18 PM |

It simply means that they live in the United Kingdom, the same as you live in the USA. Reply #8. Aug 01 09, 6:26 PM |

Anton, I beg to differ. There seems to be a lot of places in the USA, especially New England, that are named after UK towns and cities. Also there are plenty of places in the US, apart from the big cities and states, that other nationalities don't know about, Reply #9. Aug 01 09, 11:19 PM |

'Because most of the places in the UK not a lot of people have heard of.' See, this is one of the reasons I like this site, the number of Americans on it and the different world view that they have. Rather like when we had an Empire and the World map became centred on London and the Greenwich meridian. I've always been fond of the terminology you use too...Paris France instead of Paris Illinois or Paris Missouri. Back to the question, what Prison said. We live here. Reply #10. Aug 02 09, 2:08 AM |

Agree with Baea - England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, seem to have become Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and Britain - or UK. Which is why I've squeezed "England" into my profile, before England finally ceases to exist. Yes what you said, Bob. My honeymoon included Boston and Norwich. Not Boston, Lincolnshire and Norwich, the county town of Norfolk: but Boston, Massachusetts, and Norwich, Connecticut. If I google something in Bedford, and forget to click UK pages, I will get innumerable results from all the Bedford Counties all over America. Reply #11. Aug 02 09, 2:29 AM |

There are not many choices when you are putting forward your location, I mean had to put UK rather than Wales because that was the only option, and when it came to county I had to use Glamorgan, which has not existed as a single entity since 1974, we used to be Mid Glamorgan, but are now in the very long-winded County Borough of Rhondda-Cynon-Taff, which again is not an option, the person who designed these location labels has a primitive concept of geography and politics lol. I didn't really notice that it defaulted to UK - I'd put England if asked. As to why there are so many of us, although we're a tiny island, we're very densely populated - about the same as the population of Canada, Australia and New Zealand added together! It's an English speaking site, so there you go. Reply #14. Aug 02 09, 2:32 PM |

Serious question here, this came up during a pub quiz the other night. Is there a difference between the United Kingdom and Great Britian, or are they the same? Reply #15. Aug 02 09, 4:16 PM |

Great Britain is the island that contains England, Scotland and Wales. UK includes Northern Ireland. Reply #16. Aug 02 09, 4:26 PM |

Just to confuse you non UK quizzers even more - the British Isles include Ireland, Channel Islands as well as the smaller islands around the coast. However, the Republic of Ireland (Eire - or Southern Ireland) is not in the UK. Reply #18. Aug 02 09, 5:00 PM |

I think of myself as English, but that does seem to be becoming a "dirty word" here lately :-S I've noticed on official forms that have those "optinal ethnicity" tick boxes, English isn't there! I can be any number of things - Welsh, Irish, Scottish, British, Romany, you name it, but to be English it means ticking "white, other" and writing English into a space. Heaven knows what "non-white" English people do.... I also had to put Durham, as where I live, in Hartlepool, is historically County Durham, but is now a "unitary authority" and not in a county, but nobody apart from out Council seems to care lol. We were in Cleveland County but that was abolished! Reply #19. Aug 02 09, 5:07 PM |

I never understood why they had to mess about with the county boundaries Rowena. I was born in Somerset and when they changed the area I was born in to Avon I refused to use the name. It is now North Somerset and I still reckon to have been born in Somerset. Bring back Rutland I say! Maybe we should start a campaign to bring back England as well? Reply #20. Aug 02 09, 11:37 PM |
