Dagny, I cannot recommend Dorothy Dunnett's historical fiction books, "The Lymond Chroncles" highly enough. However, I'm not convinced they're not cursed. I've recommended these books to everyone I know; no one will read them. I bought them for both my sisters and my Mother and mailed them to them, all six of them in hardback -- no go. My Mother and one sister sent them back to me! My other sister sold her copies. There are a few online groups devoted to these books, and to Miss Dunnett, and I have since learned this is the lament of almost everyone in this group. One person told me she waited 30 years to find someone to talk to about these books. I don't get it, at all. I was hooked by the first line in "The Game Of Kings." Don't let anyone tell you she wrote "romance books." It's not true. She wrote "historical fiction," with a lot of factual history tossed in. If you do pick them up and read them, will you let me know? I'd love to talk to you about them. Or just post somewhere that you've at least tried to read them. I'll give you an A for effort! Thank you, Blackdresss. I just checked online - my local library doesn't have them, but there is always the inter-library loan system. I read a blurb about The Game of Kings and it sounds interesting, especially since I enjoy books set in Scotland. Perhaps your friends and relatives don't care for historical fiction. I have to be in the mood for it myself. For years I wouldn't read it, but then I tried a few and really enjoy them.
