Subject: US astronaut Neil Armstrong dies

Posted by: Philip_Eno
Date: Aug 25 12

US astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the Moon, has died at the age of 82, US media report.

Earlier this month he had surgery to relieve blocked coronary arteries.

He walked on the Moon on 20 July 1969, famously describing the event as "one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind".

Last November Armstrong, along with three other astronauts, received the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest US civilian award.

He was the commander of the Apollo 11 spacecraft. He and fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin spent nearly three hours walking on the moon.

I remember staying up to watch him walk on the moon. That inspired me. His passing saddens me.

I watched it live as well in the early hours whilst we were filling up an Army lorry on the way back from Wales to Colchester.

The other reason I have always been able to remember it was it was my Birthday

RIP to a Pioneer

My dad was in the US Army and we were stationed in Kaiserslautern Germany when Mr. Armstrong first set foot on the moon. I remember watching it on AFN TV. Normally the network had already signed off for the night. It truly was a special event.

Armstrong was also the second civilian to fly in space.

From now on, when I look up at the moon, I'll always think of the first person who walked on it. R.I.P Neil.

There is a tribute to him on Wednesday. It's called "Wink at the moon" Very apt. His family have asked, "When it's a clear night and you can see the moon, look up at it, think of Neil, and give a wink". So sweet. RIP.

Armstrong was a great man. Check this out. Very sad, yet heart-warming story.

I was a bit surprised that federal sites were not flying flags at half-mast as would have been appropriate.
