He won several elections which were internationally supervised. His democratic government was overthrown by a US backed military coup. The local TV station was also involved. The people protested and the military backed down. Try getting your news somewhere outside the corporate American propaganda machine. He also dropped poverty from 71 percent to 21 percent. The oil benefitted most and not just a rich few. Reply #2. Mar 05 13, 9:53 PM |

Real classy there, Daver. At least Chavez had the cajones to keep his country from being the whipped servant of the US--unlike other countries like Colombia and Canada. Reply #3. Mar 05 13, 10:17 PM |

Hey, mountaingoat, you forgot to mention his taking over of the Venezuelan courts, his imprisoning of political opponents and journalists, kidnapping, murder. Why don't you take your own advice a step further and talk to someone who lived under this bag of dirt? My God, I'd love to hear your defense of Joe Stalin. With Hugo, as with you and apparently houston, if they're against the USA then they're okay with you. He called George Bush the devil which excuses his crimes. Reply #5. Mar 11 13, 2:47 PM |

Hey, uh, did Chavez and Venezuela ever invade a country for no reason? Did Chavez implement a worldwide assassination program via weaponized aerial drones? Does Venezuela bully other countries? Does Venezuela back Sunni Jihadists in Syria and Libya? Which country has the higher incarceration rate? US number one! Venezuela number 99. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_incarceration_rate Don't be so hasty to throw around your nonsense, GG. Plus, are you the last person in the world to still be defending George W Bush? He himself won't even emerge from hiding. LOL. Reply #6. Mar 11 13, 11:42 PM |

If you are going to bring up incarceration rate, factor in the number of criminals the US imports on a daily basis because our immigration laws are a joke. Reply #7. Mar 12 13, 12:42 AM |

Also, Houston you forgot training death squads at the School of the Americas at Fort Benning to overthrow governments in Central and South America. Guggly you make me laugh. You Americans think the US military is out there saving democracy and freedom. The US does not do anything without making a buck. Look how little you care about your own people. A third of your country is a third world country in a first world country. Reply #8. Mar 12 13, 2:03 AM |

Goat, what you think of this country is about as important as a dead bug on my shoe. Your opinions couldn't possibly matter less to me. Houston, it's been obvious for quite a while now that you're only concerned with people who die as a result of American force. When you show that you couldn't care enough about the others who suffer in the world to even comment about it, it raises doubts as to whether you're really even concerned about the people we kill or if it's just an opportunity for you to bash your own country. You take every opportunity you can to do just that. I notice neither of you tried to refute what I said about Chavez' crimes. So I guess your logic is that it's okay for Hugo and whoever else to oppress their own people because we invaded Iraq, or we bullied this or that country. What a crock. I would have mentioned Chavez buddying up with Iran and other maniacal regimes but I doubt you guys see anything wrong with Iran. Have either of you ever held anyone besides the US accountable for anything? If so, I've never seen it. Reply #9. Mar 12 13, 10:00 AM |

"You Americans think...." Hmmmm all 300+ million of us? Isn't that a bit of a sweeping statement coming from such an insightful person? You'll have to do better than trying to set up little straw men. Can you imagine if I said "all you Australians" followed by anything? You'd be crying in your Fosters. Reply #10. Americans still taking the high moral ground. WOW. Torture, illegal rendition, massacres of civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan, Drones killing civilians in droves. Starting a war of aggression in Iraq and invading. This was the reason the head Nazis where hanged for war crimes. I should not say Americans, just the right wing propagandised ones. Google Smedley Butler and educate yourselves. Reply #12. Mar 13 13, 2:00 AM |

Our current administration is right wing is it? Just wondering because there's been a large increase in the range and number of drone strikes since Satan left office. In fact, most of Satan's foreign policy has remained intact or been beefed up. Reply #14. Mar 13 13, 8:39 AM |

Hey, I'm generally libertarian-anarchist, so I think most governments are criminal organizations. The US just happens to be the biggest criminal organization on the planet. I'm not defending Chavez, but I object to the America always super-duper/any country who opposes US policy is evil propaganda. It is intellectually numb and leads to little scrutiny of the government's actions. And if I focus on American crimes it's a)because I am American and I am subject to the machinations of this government and I am taxed to support them and b)America just happens to be the sole country ranging the Earth and picking fights and meddling in everyone else's business. I would object to Chavez or the Iranians more if they had actually invaded someone lately, or had drone fleets across the Earth, or were in the process of re-colonializing Africa, or were economically strangling a country over a non-existent nuclear program, or were destroying an entire region over a farcical "war on drugs". And to much, if not most, of the world's population--including a substantial chunk of America--George W Bush is indeed the devil. And increasingly so is Obama--who Bill Kristol called "a born-again neocon". Reply #18. Mar 13 13, 10:46 PM |

I'd like to add: c)because the US government's action theoretically represent me, and if I'm ever taken hostage by some group who is ticked off at the actions of Uncle Sam and wants to cut my throat, I want to be able to open up the Funtrivia chatboard and say "Bro, look here, I was against all this terrible stuff my government did to your people. I AM NOT COMPLICIT IN THEIR CRIMES. Now let me go." Reply #19. Mar 13 13, 11:01 PM |
