Love her or loathe her, you couldn't ignore her.

I seem to be unusual in that I liked some of her policies, but not all of them, so I couldn't be said to love her or loathe her. However, she was a leader who acted rather than reacted, which is what we've had since then. Good quote from Simon Weston

"If you think, over the last 20 years we've been shepherded and ushered, we've not been led and we had a leader then and she was a great leader"

Margaret Thatcher was a great leader and made her mark on the history of England. It is a pity there are not more like her. She deserved every accolade she got and very little of the biased criticisms.

She was, IMO, more worthy than the entire current crop of MP's put together. He3r leadership and vision was only surpassed by Sir Winston Churchill and she was, again IMO, the best Prime Minister we had since that great man.

RIP "Iron Lady", here is one who will mourn your passing.

My condolences to the British people. Like all politicians I'm sure some despised her, but she was a legend and will be remembered.

Didn't care at all for her policies in Ulster, but she at least had some economic sense, and was a good friend to the United States. So, RIP, Maggie.

Loathed. Did more bad than good, IMO; not only in Norn Iron, Daver. I suspect that she had more friends and admirers abroad than at home. Her death now is meaningless.

No prime minister in history, has generated so much hostility from so many in Scotland. Almost from the moment that Thatcher entered N0 10 in 1979, the Scottish Tories went into a tailspin from which they never recovered. They were wiped out in the 1997 general election and to this day there is still only one Scottish Tory MP in the whole of Scotland. The final nail in her political coffin was the poll tax, which she inflicted on Scotland in 1987, a year ahead of England flat-rate "community charge" - in which "a dustman paid the same as a Duke.

She harrowed the North with her policies in a way unseen since the Conqueror, Entire communities were destroyed for a generation and nothing was put in its place.
There were street parties last night, with choruses of Munchkins. The rich and greedy will comprise most of the mourners, along with foreigners who didn't live through those years and see the damage that indifference to society and its weaker members can cause
My father is recovering from a high-quality hangover as we speak, a soldier for decades, but a decent human being for longer.

I was hoping that a discussion wouldn't happen here, on this lovely site because of the controversial nature of the topic.
But the eulogising is impossible for me to stomach without offering an alternative.

Much of the eulogising seems to come from abroad.

Are you happy it's not Cher?
Apparently the Twitter hashtag #nowthatchersdead caused some confusion amongst fans of the singer. Joy on both sides when clarity was regained.

You're right, Leslie. You'd get skinned making a trade like that.

Good article, J - but they couldn't have gone much further left (Galloway, Tatchell, Livingstone) for comments, and the comments were, I thought, surprisingly tame.

We're off the hook, Daver - what a relief!

I admired Margaret Thatcher and I am from the North. She refused to be held to ransom by the Trade Unions. My father was a Socialist and he and I had many a 'discussion' about Maggie. We all have our views and opinions about her.

She was a great leader, it's a shame that none have matched her since! I for one have never 'warmed' to Tony Blair, but would I rejoice should he die, the answer is 'No'.

She was a good person & meant well, despite what some say. May she rest in peace.
