It's possible, but that's my attitude with any belief. Sorta hope not because I'm not sure how my Karma credit would hold up. Reply #2. Aug 11 09, 10:19 AM |

Oh yes, I believe in karma, the jinx or subliminal retribution, whatever you want to call it. Many, many stories which I don't want to bore any of you with. I will say, though, that in order to jinx yourself, you don't even need to say it out loud, all you have to is think it and you get paid out. It is not a coincidence that if you are out in the water and think or say to yourself, "Well, just one more wave", the ocean goes completely flat for several minutes. Reply #4. Aug 11 09, 11:39 AM |

No, exactly the opposite. Nothing fatalistic about karma (same thing as the christian concept of law of compensation), it is one's action that comes back and wreak havoc. Plus, the longer the interval, the harsher the payout when it happens. Reply #7. Aug 11 09, 1:10 PM |

Much as I like practising Buddhism in daily life that and the associated reincarnation don't seem to work for me. Unless results either take years or even future lifetimes (like anyone would ever know that) most actions have absolutely no consequences unless caught and punished. If not then most people I've seen break one or more of the ten commandments have very good and successful lives, and the nicest people suffer the most. That's not how I'd see karma. Reply #9. I think a lot of people throw the word "karma" around without actually knowing what it means. A lot of people use it incorrectly and don't seem to understand the nature of karma, at least not in the Buddhist or Hindu sense of the word. Reply #10. Aug 24 09, 3:35 PM |

I was expecting Amanda to return and enlighten us as to the proper way to use karma, but she doesn't seem to believe in re-visiting a thread once she's posted in it. Disappointing or what? But it doesn't really matter now, because Earl said all we need to know, and he's said it perfectly succinctly. I'm happy with his version. Reply #12. Sep 05 09, 2:52 PM |

True. That is really the basic sense of karma. The opposite of that too. Do bad things, bad things will happen to you. One thing I would add from experience. The longer the interval between action and payback, the more intense that payback is and ESPECIALLY in the negative function. Reply #13. Sep 06 09, 2:00 AM |

I would also add that karma is a personal thing and has different nuances for different people. I would feel uncomfortable suggesting that there is a blanket concept of karma for everyone beyond the basic good, good, bad, bad mentality. I have a pretty firm grasp (I wish I didn't) on karma but do the inferences I have drawn gibe wholly with whatever religion prescribes? Probably not and I would assume the same with everyone else. Each person's relationship with the concept of karma is, well, personal. Sure, ideas will generally correlated but I bet it's like fingerprints, similarities but no 2 exactly alike. And I forgot where I was going with but, hey, it sounds good, doesn't it? :) Reply #14. Sep 06 09, 3:51 AM |

Correlate. Karma put the "d" too close to the "e" on my keyboard. Actually, no, that was just my clumsiness! :) Reply #15. Sep 06 09, 3:53 AM |

Lesley, what is your problem with me? This is the second time you have attacked me in a thread. For your information, I got my chatterbox badge and really was too busy to come back here until now. If you are really curious about the proper definition of karme, I am sure that a quick google search could enlighten you (pardon the pun) better than I could. Reply #19. Sep 17 09, 1:29 PM |
