Subject: Art that moves you

Even those who claim not to know much about art but know what they like are affected by works of art. What painting or paintings, sculptures, or other art works have had a profound emotioal affect on you?

For me, 'The Return of the Prodigal Son' by Rembrandt, any of Marc Chagall's dreamlike works, the smooth lines of abstract sculptures by Henry Moore and Brancusi elicit an emotional response in me that is difficult to explain.

How about you?

I really like Thomas Kinkade's art. His has a surreal feel to it that makes you believe in the mystical :) I am really fond of paintings that depict landscapes especially with waterfalls and forests :) I agree that art affects us all, much like music does.

I really love impressionism. My favorites are Sisley, Pissarro, and of course Monet and Renoir.

My preferred medium is Watercolours, and as such I am a big fan of Joseph Mallord William Turner - in my opinion the greatest of English artists - and his friend Thomas Girtin, who sadly died at the young age of 27.

As for Oils,I love the work of the Pre-Raphaelites - John Everett Millais in particular. His 'Ophelia' is completely haunting.

Though I can think of nothing specific, there have been different paintings, sculptures and other art work, which for whatever reason, I see deeper into then the rest of the works of art. As of now I can't say why, or one type of artwork that has moved me, just that ceratin pieces have moved me before.

I was lucky enough to be at an exhibition several years ago, when a series of pictures done by young Indigenous boys in the 40s & 50s was returned to Australia by the Colgate University (USA).
These boys were at one of the "missions" run by the government of the day, but were taught to paint by a teacher there until it was deemed not to be good for the boys.
I was there when some of the few surviving artists came to see their work for the first time in almost 50 years...
seeing their faces when they saw their work again, and hearing their reminiscences.. that day, art moved me.. to tears.

Something that challenges you and your perceptions. Went to Madrid in May and spent hours studying "Garden of Earthly Delights" by Bosch at the Prado, so much detail that requires attention, several centuries ahead of its time. Dali and Munch are two artists that also inspire and challenge you.

My favorites are Renoir, Rembrandt, and all authentic Delftware.

Incidentally, I went to high school with Thomas Kincade, met him a couple of times.

Definitely Van Gogh and Sisley - stunning in the Musee D'Orsay in Paris. Hope you meant the Prado and not Prada, DD... :-)

The pictures by Van Gogh have accompanied me all my life, they were everywhere - at schools, offices etc., the copies, of course. I considered them the most boring pictures until I was in Musee d´Orsay and saw them in original. Only then did I realized how wonderful and charming they are.

I've got a copy of the "Garden of Earthly Delights" on a block by Athena. There's class!

I do like Murillo's work. Not so much the religious pieces, as the everyday subjects - beggars and street vendors - that others might have thought beneath them.

Some folks in my parents' generation had a soft spot for native American art. One of these works hung on the wall of our house for years until my father took it to his office. I'm not sure what its official title was, but we always referred to it as "the painting with the blotches". It was really a giant (5'*3') glorified Rorschach test, in black and red paint on a white background. To me, the right side of the painting looked like an elephant, or the eastern side of an inaccurate map of China. That was on days when I really gave it some thought. On other days I'd simply gaze at the painting and lose myself in its simplicity and abstraction. I've told my father a good number of times I want that painting to hang on my wall, but I wouldn't count on getting it before buying a home to hang it in.

Good choice, Lesley, good choice. Spanish art, good choice!

I've been moved by the wall art in the caves of Altamira in Spain and Lascaux in France.

I'm fortunate enough to have seen the collections of the Prado at least 20 times. I like the works of Goya and El Greco there, but I've always had to run past a Titian that closely resembles my ex-husband. :(
