I always talk to people I meet when traveling anywhere, especially outside the U.S. I don't believe I've ever had a bad experience, and some of my fondest memories traveling involve talking with people who are from other countries. For example, I was in Europe during the 2008 World Cup, and I remember sitting outside the little cafe on the ground floor of our hotel in Rome watching a match with two college girls from Mexico, three couples from Australia, and all the cafe employees. We were all laughing and cheering for both teams so loudly, that my mother and sister two floors up in our room thought a riot was going on! Such fun and irreplaceable memories.

The only time I've traveled outside the US I was too young to appreciate any of it. There are family pictures where I'm far more interested in my ice cream cone than Big Ben. That said, I have quite a few friends who came here from elsewhere and I have seen most of this great country and I always find it fascinating and encouraging that we can be so different yet all so somehow connected.

In 1980 on my first trip to America I was waiting in the S.F. International airport for my plane home to Australia. An exceptionally nice chap struck up a conversation, and finding that we both actually had hours to wait invited me to dinner. This began a long friendship with myself and my husband which survives even to today. I cannot recall one negative meeting on either trip to the States but I did make a lot of friends who still keep in touch.

I just came back home from Brussels. Last night with my coleagues tried to drink a bottle of red wine in my hotel room.We didn't had a corkscrew so, remembering my school camp days I tried to put the cork inside the bottle with my toothbrush (stupid, I know!).After a few tries the cork went down and the wine went all over me , my bed sheets and the carpet. Besides the waste of good wine I was upset about the mess.Next morning, with my credit card in hand I went to the frontdesk ,explained the situation and offered to cover the damage but, to my surprise the clerk said "It's no problem, it wasn't your fault".So far so good. I checked-out and took a cab for the airport. On the airport area I saw a sign saying "KISS AND GO". I asked the driver about it and he said "It means that I have to kiss you good-bye". Long silence on my part, but I'm amused. Then he said "I was joking, it means I can't stay long after I drop you here." OK , I'm still good, nothing so extraordinary so far.
On the airport, which was not at all crowded at the hour, I passed my trolley over some guy's foot (my mistake being an airhead at the moment).I turned and started (full of guilt) to apollogize "I'm so very sorry..." and the reply came instantly "Oh no, I was in your way". This is it. I can't take anymore of this...this "NICE THINGS TO SAY" DAY. It's a conspiracy of the POLITE ONES! And I feel good!
And just to assure me of that, the clerk on the passport check booth said to me in my own language "La revedere" which means "Goodbye".
The moral of this story, which is entirely true, is that BRIEF ENCOUNTERS with nice people can give you more joy and happiness in some days than all the significant things or persons in your life.

I never been out of the US, but I have met other blind people from other states in the past & found out that we have some things in common.
