When a quiz is rated more difficult, I think I'll do worse, but I don't let it affect me. I play it anyway. Especially if it's something that interests me. If it interests me and is rated difficult, chances are I'll learn something. I also do like to see my quizzes rated well, and I usually monitor the "new" ones and try to guess where they'll end up. But if it's rated 100,000 or something high like that, it doesn't matter. Some of my favorite quizzes of mine are impossible rated brain teasers at the very bottom of my list. :-) Reply #1. I consider it all an inevitability. By all means I shoot for highly-rated quizzes, but it's out of my hands once it's on the site. It's an odd curiosity, though, and it does affect the way quizzes are presented in the directories. Reply #2. Feb 23 11, 5:27 PM |

Lately I'm a lot less obsessive about it, but I usually check on the ratings and such for new quizzes pretty regularly. Once they get ranked, however, I lose them in my big long list (and I don't even that many quizzes, in the grand scheme of things - can't imagine having 1200+!) As for the Impossible/Very Difficult thing, I'm not *too* worried about it, but I prefer to see my quizzes get Average or maybe Tough. The concern to me is if I really tried to give hints to the answers or if I was previously worried it be too easy, then I'm just baffled as to how the Very Difficult rating appears! But as we say, different people know different things. Reply #3. Feb 23 11, 5:28 PM |

Oh and about worrying about where they end up being ranked... it's not a big concern to me, it's certainly not going to stop me writing more quizzes. But sometimes I really have to wonder why some of my quizzes that are at the very bottom of my list are there... the ones that written in 2003, sure, they're not that great by today's standards. But I have some other relatively new ones, including a commission quiz, ranked lower than some of my really really old ones - I don't get it. Yet all of my 90210 quizzes, most of which I myself consider average, are in my top 50. Weird. Reply #4. Feb 23 11, 5:32 PM |

As a player, I only look at the difficulty if I am feeling borderline about the quiz from its title and introduction. If the title and intro have engaged my interest, it doesn't matter how hard or easy it is. Mind you, when I was choosing crosswords to get my badge for atking them in Hard mode, I definitely browsed around looking for Easy, and preferably Small or Medium. As an author, I write what I am interested in. When the puropse of the quiz was to write a bit of entertainment for the masses, I am disappointed if it doesn't get lots of plays and good ratings. But if it is about an obscure (brilliant) television show, I don't expect many plays, while still hoping for good ratings. I do have a few quizzes ranked below 50,000, and I have spent some time trying to see what makes them different from the more highly-rated quizzes so that I can try to avoid doing it again. We all want to be loved! Reply #5. Feb 23 11, 5:32 PM |

It's nice to have a highly rated quiz, but some quizzes will never achieve it because they are on fairly specialist subjects or books that I love but no-one else seems to have read. As for the Difficult, Tough etc. I wonder sometimes how some of mine end up at that level, especially when I have tried to make them fairly average, but that is out of my hands, so no point worrying about it. I have recently decided to try to be more adventerous in the quizzes I play. I played one by a team mate on a book I haven't read by an author I am not familiar with, and it has made me want to read the book. Reply #6. Feb 23 11, 5:34 PM |

I did that once Christina, I played several quizzes by a then team mate on a TV show that wasn't even shown here at the time, and I was so intrigued by it and dying to know "what happened next" that when it finally was shown here I rearranged the entire family schedule so I could watch it :-D Reply #7. Oh, well as for my OWN quizzes getting rated, most of my quizzes I expect to get those ratings. The ones that are general knowledge or something are generally average or tough, the impossible brain teasers I wrote to purposely get people to score poorly are impossible, and my kids quizzes are easy or very easy. My brain teasers vary from easy-tough, and I think my quizzes are all pretty well ranked. I don't care what the rating is, but I do think that average and tough quizzes get played more than the rest, though the very easy quizzes are played a lot for easy points. ;-) Reply #8. Interesting thread Row. I don’t tend to worry so much about the ratings of my quizzes that much these days, though I do get a bit disappointed when a recent one comes in poorly received, especially if it’s one that I’m pretty chuffed about. I do have a couple of obscure quizzes that are highly rated but I feel that’s because it was played, initially, by people with an interest in the subject, they rated it well and now no one plays or rates it any more. Most of my quizzes have a difficulty factor between average and difficult – none are harder though some are easier. I’m happy with that because it means I’ve created something that can be managed by Mr Average and it has presented some form of challenge. As for playing. It’s not often that I’ll go to a favourite subject to select a quiz. I’ll play every quiz that’s been written by my team mates and the new ones as they appear in the lounge here and generally the new ones that come on-line. Generally, these are only shown as ‘New Game’ so I won’t know the difficulty factor beforehand. I’m not fazed by the subject (unless its wrestling, poker or … gasp, horror … video games) as I figure I might learn something Reply #9. Feb 23 11, 7:34 PM |

It just occurred to me that I used to "worry" a lot more, and pore over the lists each Monday, before I had the Sunglasses Badge, and the 5, 10 and 15 Categories Badges. To get them, it matters where the quizzes are ranked, but of course, once I had them it didn't have to matter any more, and I stopped being so "obsessive". That and just having more quizzes altogether. When I only had a few I used to check them much more than I do now. Reply #10. Feb 24 11, 4:34 AM |

I do, because I haven't earned the Cool Quizzes badge. I think if it is obscure, you either get brilliant ratings or you get terrible ratings. There's not really anything in between. I don't exactly worry, but I wonder and anticipate what will happen to my quizzes. I create expectations in my head, sometimes they are above or below. But, like most authors I create quizzes for the fun of it! Reply #11. Feb 24 11, 4:45 AM |

I'm agreeing with Row on this. Now I have enough sunnies and different categories, I don't stress over the rankings as much. I'm still happy to have three ranked in the top 1000 and do check on them to see if they are maintaining their precarious hold. Most of my quizzes are 'average' or 'tough' with one 'difficult' and one 'easy', so I feel I'm pitching them about right. Reply #12. Feb 24 11, 5:03 AM |

I don't look at it as much as I used to do. It still can be painful though when you put a lot of work in and to see the quiz do less than you expected it to. Reply #13. Feb 24 11, 8:14 AM |

Similarly to other people, I don't mind so much since I got the Cool Quizzes badge, but it can be a bit annoying when a quiz I really like doesn't do as well as I thought it might. But then I realize many people rate based on difficulty, and my quizzes can be quite specific science, so I brush it off and am happy that there are players who will play without judging it by its not-so-good rank! :) As long as people can still play and enjoy my quizzes, I don't really mind! When I first started writing quizzes, I used to print out the standings every week, so I had a record of how my quizzes moved. These days, I often don't even bother checking a new quiz, much less one that's been online for a while. Partly this is due ot having more quizzes - it's easier to fret over your one or two chicks. And partly it's due to realizing that standings don't always really measure much. Quizzes that were in the top 100 for a year or so now don't even have sunnnies - in a world where ratings meant something, both of these couldn't be true. I'm much more invested in the notes I get from players - those matter to me. Reply #15. Feb 26 11, 12:22 PM |

I know that I cant write a quiz as well as most of you can, so I don't typically look at ratings. Reply #16. Mar 01 11, 3:04 PM |

I only worry about ratings if they are disappointing - then I would be concerned about what in the quiz has not worked for players. Otherwise I am not too concerned about them. That hasn't always been the case though. Like agony, I used to track my rankings week by week - I had more time on my hands then! Reply #17. Mar 01 11, 4:51 PM |

I look at ratings for the first few days of a new quiz to identify anything that may seem to have not worked, as Snowman suiggested. I also look at the % correct for each question for that same period, to identify questions that did or did not work; this is especially important for my photo quizzes, as they are experimental in the way they use the extra dimension of images. I can clearly see that some types of question are working better than others! But once I know that I have learned what there is to be learned from the players, I let it go to sink or swim on its own. Mostly they swim. :) Reply #18. Mar 02 11, 3:26 PM |

I think back to the time when I played one of my all-time favorite quizzes. Surprisingly, it was near the bottom of a category and didn't have very good ratings at all. However, it was very well-constructed and interestingly obscure. I assume the obscurity of it might've been its downfall. No, I typically don't worry about ratings, but I usually tend to play higher-up quizzes than ones lower on the list. Reply #19. Mar 23 11, 7:48 AM |

Maybe I shouldn't be saying this but I don't want my quizzes to be easy. The ones that I select to play are, in the main tough and/or difficult and consequently the quizzes that I've authored and will compile in the future will be as challenging as I can make them. I don't worry about the ratings too much but it is nice to see them being played, it's interesting to see what percentage of players get the single question submissions correct and it's nice to get some feedback. The site is called 'FunTrivia'.... I don't think we should be worrying about anything! SS Reply #20. Mar 28 11, 8:31 PM |
