Subject: All of these - none of these

Posted by: JanIQ
Date: May 12 13

The template apparently checks for answers such as "all of these" or "none of these", which are discouraged.

But what if I use an answer with a word containing the letters "all" or "none"? Suppose I would obtain the answer "nones" as one of the evening prayers in Roman Catholicism?

I've seen this happening in a quiz I've just submitted, but not with the example I cited above. I won't give the answer away...

It will warn you but don't worry about it. The editor will see it is not an all of these or none of these and it will be fine. I have this happen from time to time too.

Yup-- it's just a friendly reminder, but it won't stop you from submitting.

I have had it stop a single question in its tracks, though. I can't remember exactly, as it was a while ago, but the answer was something on the lines of 'allowance'. No matter what I did, the system would not accept the question. I gave up on it eventually.

I've also had the problem in single questions.

I think they make it stricter in the Question Quest because they absolutely do not want "All of these" to be an answer because then NOBODY reads the questions or the answer choices. I can understand that.

On a quiz, you will notice that after the red warning, there is still a green OK tick. That means the question is technically acceptable by the system - which doesn't mean it meets other guidelines, of course. If you don't see that green OK, you may be able to save your quiz, but you won't be able to submit it.

I understand that, Gracious1, but the system is too sensitive and blocks answers that contain 'all', like 'shallow' or 'swallow', or song titles like 'All You Need is Love'. At least it did when I tried to submit a single question with that sort of answer, and there was no way around it - I could not submit the question.

Rossian, I just thought of a workaround. Depending on the nature of your question, you could make your answer choices something like:

* the single "All You Need Is Love"
* The Beatles - "All You Need Is Love"
* "All You Need Is Love" (1967)

Or are you saying that if "all" appears _anywhere_ it triggers the block?

I just reread what you said, too. I don't think I've ever had something like "swallow" blocked, personally. But maybe I'll test it... ;-)

Don't bother testing it, gracious1. The filter on single questions is set very tight, and doesn't allow "all" in any form, not even as part of a larger word such as ball or swallow. In a full quiz, you get a warning about the use being discouraged, even if the "all" is there as part of a larger word, but can ignore it. In fact, you can submit the quiz with an "all of these" option, but should be prepared for an editor to ask you to change it.

Or drag it into Pitt Street and change the wording?

That used to be a very old joke in this country. A policeman had to write a report on a dead horse he found in Castlereagh Street, Sydney, but he couldn't spell Castlereagh. His superior officer, when asked, replied "Drag it into Pitt Street"

We've got a joke like that too, with the cop changing "Boulevard" to "Ditch".

Billy Connolly used to do that gag, replacing Castlereagh for Sauciehall Street (and yes, I did have to check the spelling). Pitt Street crosses Sauciehall Street in Glasgow.

And you still spelled it wrong :P It's Sauchiehall. :)
