Subject: --The FunTrivia Amazing Race 2--

Posted by: kyleisalive
Date: Jul 31 13

I'm jumping the gun by a few hours, but I'm impatient and excited. We do a lot in this Lounge and some ventures are bigger than others.

I'm pleased to announce that on August 31, the second FunTrivia Amazing Race will commence.

That's right. We’ve been renewed.

Just like the original Amazing Race, teams will work together to venture around the site following clues and completing authoring-based tasks along the way. En route, difficult categories may be encountered and tricky puzzles may need to be solved, but as a team of two to four authors (and remember, the more, the better) you will be able to conquer the route!

Along the way, there will be six legs of the race. Five of these legs will end with a mandatory Pit Stop at which teams will depart after a predetermined amount of time. In other words, you’re not always moving; it's not non-stop writing. In fact, the more people in your team, the more you can work together to spread out the tasks. Now, more than ever, it is important to work together to accomplish your goals.

Sign ups can begin immediately and will continue until August 30th. Racers must have at least five quizzes online if they wish to join a team. It will be immensely important to keep a fast pace. A representative of the team should contact me directly to be added to the race roster.

Additional Questions/Concerns:

  • Wait...what? New rules?!
Yes! New rules. No longer will clues be handed out after a quiz has gone online. To preserve the mystery, offer less reliance on quick editing behind the scenes, and keep the race fast, teams will be given their clues upon submission to the queue. Teams will not always know where other teams are on the course, so knowing your fellow teams becomes all the more important. This will also allow tasks to be broader (eg. Include a word, base your quiz off this, etc.) and not 100% category-specific, which will stimulate a bit more creativity. As far as I've seen thus far, all categories are open for the race; last time four were not.

  • What do I need to join?
A team of two, three, or four authors; an open, creative mind; a FunTrivia forums account. Clues will be received through a five-way forum message between myself and the team members. This can be used to collaborate with teammates and prevent others from finding out your ideas via the boards.
What don't you need? Infinite time. To be realistic, not everyone will have all the time in the world at all times. This is why it pays to have several team members. If someone needs to be offline for a couple of weeks, the others can take care of that leg of the race in the meantime to support the team. The new rule change involving clues being distributed upon submission to the queue requires teams to work more cohesively than ever before since some participants may only be able to submit one at a time. If a player has a quiz in the queue, they can not submit another one until it is online. Choose partners wisely!

  • I'm not a good writer.
That's not a question at all. Last race we had a few first-time authors. Because of the fast pace of this race we are requiring all entrants to have a few quizzes already online—likely five. If you feel you are not a great writer, working together with your team may strengthen your submissions. Many (if not most) quizzes offer the opportunity to collaborate with your other teammates, even if that means writing questions without entering a template, so if one person wants to be more of an idea-maker than a quiz-submitter, then that's perfectly fine. It just needs to be okay with your group.

  • How long is a single leg of the race?
It depends on how long it takes you to complete your submissions. On the TV show, a single leg of the race normally includes Route Info (a basic 'follow the instructions' type task), a Detour (a choice between two tasks) and a Road Block (a task completable by only one member). There are tweaks here and there to make the formula work for quizwriting and not all legs of the race will feature these clue types in this order or at this frequency. When you complete a leg of the race you will arrive at a 'Pit Stop', a predetermined non-elimination point at which you'll be able to take a rest...at least until the next leg. If this seems confusing, it will ease up a lot when you start receiving clues. By the second leg you'll all be naturals. ;)
This time around, the U-Turn/Double U-Turn will make a reappearance. We will also experience the first-ever Switchback.

  • Do team quizzes factor in at all?
Only if all of the members of your race team are part of the same FT team and only if non-participants do not add questions/info. This ensures that all of the teams are playing on the same level; it's too hard to keep track if one team has ten different members writing one group of four's quiz. If this seems like it could be a problem, I recommend placing the template into the hands of one of your teammates and collaborating via the message system in the forums (which will be fairly easy to maintain). Unless a clue tells otherwise, all members of your race team may contribute questions and info to any of the quizzes.
Not all race teams will contain members on the same FT team as one another, but it shouldn't make too much of a difference in terms of submitting to the queue.

  • Wait. So everyone is always on the same playing field?
Remember—this race isn't just about being the first to the very end. Racers can win separate legs of the race and simply getting through the course can be a reward in itself! In the first race, the first three teams to have their quizzes placed online at the end of a leg received a three hour time advantage heading into the next one. Not so in this game. Because we’re doing away with the 'quiz needs to be online for a clue' requirement, authors will be penalized for each correction notice they receive. You’re working in a team; at least one of you should be able to proofread.
Stumbling teams fall behind while the front-runners keep a good pace. There will also be opportunities to forge ahead of other teams.

    --------

We will most definitely be reaching a broader array of categories this time around, and if you think you know what’s up ahead, you’re probably wrong. ;)

Hopefully we can all make this a race to remember. If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. While this isn't the first time for some of you, it is most definitely going to be the first time for some of you. Myself or any of the past racers would be glad to give insight as to how things work in this game. It can be difficult, but it can also be a great stretch of the creative muscle!

Otherwise, I look forward to seeing the teams! They will be posted here as I receive confirmation. You may also use this thread if you are looking to join a team but don't know where to start—some of our teams last time around managed wonderfully this way. :)

YES! Oh Yes! This is exactly the quiz-writing boost I've been wanting! With such extreme deadlines as this, it'll push me to actually finish writing some of the quizzes I've currently got, and make room for this wonderfulness!

And I love how the Amazing Race is the Buzzy Bee currently, when you posted this. ;)

I thought it was a great coincidence too. Season 7 was the only one not to go across the International Date Line. They went in a big circle to India and back. ;)

I'll always remember teams eating four pounds of meat in Argentina...and herding llamas in Peru.

I had no idea, but congrats and phew! ;)

Will the Four Winds blow again?
I'm curious to see the team line-ups this time. From what I hear, the some editors want to band together. Pro-team.
Because of the new clue distribution rules, they're on a completely even playing field.

Now that I've read your post after my initial excitement, I must say the changes are great news.

The changes are great news. There can be no show of bias; teams will need to rely on each other all the more; editors don't need to feel pressure. It also gives more freedom for unique challenges-- there will still be a race around the categories, by all means, but there will be more dynamic tasks.

For all participants, I very, very strongly advise having four members this time around. Three at the very least (though I will, of course, accept two-player teams). The pace of this race will be faster and the tasks will really stretch you across the site.

And yes, I will try to keep pace like last time. We'll see if I can make it into the third leg. XD

I would be interested in participating, but I don't have a team put together. If another team has an open slot, send me a FT note and I'll get back to you.

I have 35 quizzes online and I have the 15 Categories Badge, so I have experience writing in many different categories. I also participated in the FT Sprint.

    Thanks in advance!

I do hope my fellow Winds are up for this. I would love to work with them again, and it would be nice to have something to unblock my quiz writing stagnation!
