As an Australian I was surprised to learn that the country relies significantly on foreign aid to which we contribute. Reply #1. Feb 07 10, 1:59 AM |

The foreign aid was actually a one off payment made by Australia,NZ and UK in 1987. The value was $AUS24.7 million, paid into a trust fund. The profits from that are paid to Tuvalu each year. Their internet domain suffix = TV. This is becoming a very profitable source of income. They are a nation currently under threat from rising sea levels.Evidence of rising sea levels from 18,000 years ago illustrate this is a recurring problem for the people of these low lying coral islands. As an Australian, I don't think we pay enough political/economic attention to the Oceanic nations. Rather than concentrating on issues that only large countries can really influence,(i.e.USA,China,India) such as global warming,we should be actively promoting good governance in states that we have neglected in the past(Fiji). While we do this to a limited extent, greater effort is needed throughout the Pacific nations. Reply #3. Feb 07 10, 3:38 AM |
