Subject: Mongols almost ravished Europe

Europe dodged a bullet in 1242. The Mongol Horde was on the brink of invading Europe, and would have destroyed everything in its path, but fate intervened with the death of Ogadai, the son of Genghis Khan.
The Mongols returned to Mongolia to elect a new Khan, and never made it back to Europe.

The Mongols were the most efficient military force in world history, and left a path of massive death and destruction everywhere they went. Europe didn't have the forces to resist them at that point.

If the Mongols had invaded, no Renaissance, no exploration of the Americas, no Reformation or religious wars. The whole of world history would have been very, very different.

"No exploration of the Americas"? This I find hard to believe. Eric the Red visited Vinland (Canada) before the Mongolian expanse, and the Chinese sent out some explorers as well.
It is always very difficult to imagine history having taken another course.

Good point. It is possible the Chinese, seeking to flee the Mongols, would have moved eastward, and eventually could have settled in the Americas.

because the original settlers of the Americas were from Asia, they would have been genetically closer to the Chinese explorers than Europeans. And Chinese explorers probably would not have brought the same diseases. So a whole Chinese-Native culture could have emerged.
