There are some instances of Mongolian influence in the Star War movies. For example, Queen Amidala's (Star Wars, episode 1) senate costume supposedly resembles the traditional robes worn by Mongolian noble women. Also, the Ewok language is said to be a blend of the Mongolian, Tibetan, and Nepali languages. For more comments: http://www.mongolianmatters.com/2005/08/mongolia-in-star-wars.html Reply #1. Somoan Troy Polamalu is famous for playing football with the Pittsburg Steelers, but he may be more well known for his hair. He hasn't had a trim in 8 years and his curly tresses are 35" long. It takes him 45 minutes to fix his hair for a game. He says it's like what a warrior would do to prepare for battle. Reply #4. Nov 13 10, 5:46 PM |

The world's smallest nation of Nauru had to come up with other ways to generate revenue after the phosphate reserves were mostly used up in the 1960s and 1970s. For a while in the 1990s, the tiny nation became a tax haven and was a center for laundering illegal money. Also the Australia government gave Nauru aid money from 2001 to 2007 for operating a detention center on their land for those trying to enter Australia illegally. Reply #5. Nov 14 10, 3:50 PM |

The mbela is a musical instrument made and used by the Ngbaka group in the Central African Republic. It consists of a string tied to the two ends of an arched branch. The player holds the string in front of his mouth, strikes the string with his finger, and changes the tone and loudness with his mouth. Reply #7. Nov 16 10, 8:57 AM |

Thank you matthewpokeman for adding to this thread. I am behind a few countries. Too much Thanksgiving preparation. It's true - you can watch soap operas in Turkey. One is called "Gumus" (or "Noor" as it is known in Arabic). The main character is a Muslim man Muhanned. This show has several million viewers throughout the Arab world. Reply #9. In 2007, George Kourounis became the first person to cross Dominica's Boiling Lake from above. He was suspended by ropes, and his adventure was shown on the television show "Angry Planet. Along the edges of the lake, the temperature ranges from 180-197F (82-91C). The center of the lake actively boils. The lake is actually a flooded fumarole. More about that from Wikipedia: "A fumarole (Latin fumus, smoke) is an opening in a planet's crust, often in the neighborhood of volcanoes, which emits steam and gases such as carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, hydrochloric acid, and hydrogen sulfide." OK, admit that you are old enough to remember the stunning gymnastic performances of Belarusian Olga Korbut at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich. (I certainly do!) She is credited, more than anyone, with making gymnastics a popular sport among young girls. When US President Richard Nixon, met her at the White House, he told her: "I have always been impressed with your ability to land on your feet.” Reply #12. Nov 27 10, 7:56 PM |

I read this on another website in a thread about weird things in Peruvian culture. Peruvians don't like ice in their drinks because they think they will catch colds. They think those of us who eat ice cream in the winter are really strange. Also from Peru: To absorb bad energy, cut a lime in fourths and put it under your bed. Reply #13. Nov 29 10, 4:38 PM |

While Cameroon was competing against Colombia in the 2003 FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final, one of Cameroon's players collapsed on the field. Midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe later died. During the final in which Cameroon lost to France, the Indomitable Lions wore shirts embroidered with Foe's name and the date of his birth and death. Reply #14. Nov 30 10, 10:02 PM |

From Serbia: When in Belgrade you will want to visit Kalemegdan, the most popular park. It is known for its many walking paths, beautiful fountains and statues, and magnificent river views. A former canal which supplied water during the Middle Ages is now covered by earth, but it has been suggested that the canal be recreated. Kalemagdan also has several miles of mostly unexplored underground corridors and catacombs Reply #15. Dec 02 10, 8:37 AM |

In Hungary, Santa is called Mikulas, and he visits on St. Nicholas' Day which is December 6th. Children hang stockings by the fireplace and also put boots in the windows. For good children, the boots will be filled candy, fruit, and nuts. Bad children only receive a switch that usually has a devil figure attached. But, since most children are both good and bad, most of them get both the treats and the switch. Boldog karácsonyt - "Merry Christmas" Reply #17. Dec 04 10, 8:08 PM |
