Subject: Adding a New Stop, Making 196

Posted by: geniusonwheels
Date: Jan 18 11

If you've been following world news, you would have seen about a referendum happening in Sudan, which if passed, would allow Southern Sudan to become the 196th country in the world.

If this passes, how should we approach this?

Should we write a new quiz?
Should we redesign the '195 Days' badge into '196 Days' badge?
Should we rename the entire 'The 195 Day Bus Trip'?

Of course, if this doesn't pass, we are still taking the bus around the world, just like we were before.

So, should we all make room for a new person boarding the bus?

Hmmm, very interesting. I don't know what we should do.

Not another country! This will change the whole challenge, but I'm used to 195, not 196... Hmmm...

If we are going to query the 195 figure, I would have thought there should be more discussion of Taiwan, assuming this is the country currently omitted - although there are quizzes about Taiwan on the site.

I just googled number of countries in the world and the answer was from 192 to 201!(the hold outs being Taiwan, the Vatican and Kosovo) I think that the holy powers that listed 195 countries in the world, should decide that question. They've been doing alright so far!

As I mentioned on a thread elsewhere (possibly the Author Lounge), we are open to constant debate as to why various entities are or are not included the minute we abandon firm definitions. Had we started with 192, using the UN member states, there would be no confusion - new UN members could join the ride, other states not. But since we started with three 'extra' countries, we need to consider not only newly-emerging states such as South Sudan (actually, we probably need to replace Sudan with two new quizzes, one focusing on each of the areas), but also self-proclaimed independent states with some international recognition. It can get awfully thorny awfully fast!

Since the badge has been established at 195 days (even though the first tour actually missed a country and only had 194 stops), perhaps we could maintain that number, but rotate countries out. That way each circuit would have the requisite number of stops.

The country (or, possibly, countries) to be rotated out could be determined either at random or by removing the lowest-ranked quiz from the list, and advertising that a replacement is needed for that country before it rotates in again for the following circuit. That timeline should allow plenty of time for the authors here to produce a good replacement.

As discussed in the thread linked below, the current tour includes the 192 UN members, plus Vatican City, Taiwan and Kosovo. Any discussion of the inclusion of future additions needs to take into account the fact that these three are already included, by whatever standards were originally used to select countries.

My opinion is a country should exist for more than 20 minutes before we give it a quiz

It's official....South Sudan is now a country, with the people voting overwhelming to break up Sudan.

Spidersghost that is very funny.

But when do we get to add a country that is only 20 minutes old?. Like...never! So we should take the opportunity. Though...perhaps it doesn't have ten questions of its own history, culture or food, yet. True. It does have lots of political strife. And the quiz could be on the process of creating itself. Unique!

What about some kind of bonus...you get a star upon thar or..I donno you guys are the genuises there. Somehow make Southern Sudan a unique stop. Or...put all those thornies into the unique stop. People can choose to go there, or not.

I would love to see a quiz about this Southern Sudan situation, whatever you decide about its place in the tour.

Also, the way things are going of late, other countries could well pop up.

Texas, for instance. Quebec! (Calm down, just kidding)

If somebody wants to write a quiz about the emerging nation of South Sudan or whatever its official name will be, I would be happy to offer it as part of the Fringe Tour. I don't have time to write such a quiz myself right now, but would certainly keep my eyes open for one if it were to be written.

Terry is the only one who decided which quizzes are on the Bus Ride. At the moment there are nearly 30 countries with new and improved quizzes waiting to be placed on the itinerary for countries we WILL visit. Who knows when, if ever, an extra country will be added?

For information of countries around the world, the CIA has a very good reference

There should be a new stop for South Sudan.

So who's writing the quiz? If someone writes a good quiz on South Sudan, and someone writes a quiz on North Sudan (since the current quiz on Sudan covers both areas), I can let Terry know that we have 196 countries covered in quizzes, with two quizzes ready to replace the current single Sudan quiz. Adding a new one will, however, require reprogramming, and might be just a touch more complicated than it sounds. Don't hold your breath.

I might add that, however current this seems, there are a number of other entities that claim political sovereignty which are not currently included on the Bus Ride.

If another country is added, then I imagine you could get the 195-day badge and earn a "bar", a little like service personell are entitled to such a bar if they are awarded a second medal at any time. For those who already have the 195-day badge, they could 'upgrade' to a new 196-day badge if a decision is made to change the name.

I have halfway written a South Sudan quiz, and the author of the current Sudan quiz is going to make the necessary changes in the near future so that it does refer exclusively to the current Sudan. So we will be ready to add South Sudan shortly, if it is decided to do so. But possibly one of the existing non-UN countries that we visit should be replaced to keep the total at 195.

I wonder if a note should simply be put on the information page, explaining that at the time the game was set up, there were 195 countries, hence the name of the game (and badge). It could also note which countries have been added since then.

I think I am right that to get the badge you don't actually have to play a quiz for each country - just to play 195 times (to allow for missing the odd day). So most people will have a few duplicates in their total anyway.
