Subject: Timot Leste (today's destination)

I was fascinated by the coincidence of today's destion, East Timor, and a one-page spread in the Anzac Day supplement of today's West Australian newspaper. This article features the 2/2nd Independent Company, a Commando group who went to East Timor to try to stop the movement of the Japanese forces towards of Australia.
This is particularly important to me as my father was one of the 270 men in that company. That group were cut off from contact with Australia for several months, and were believed to have been either killed or captured. They did survive, and tied up an estimated 10 000 Japanese troops.

We can be proud of Australia's role in preventing further violence in Timor Leste in recent years.

Like many newly independent nations, Timor Leste is having problems establishing a peaceful and prosperous nation.

My best wishes to your father who will be honoured soon on Anzac Day(there's a thread on this topic on this site).
