Subject: Reality TV? Boo! Hiss!

I am looking forward eagerly to the day when reality TV shows go the way of the dodo. The only RTV show even slightly worth the candle is 'The Amazing Race', which at least gets one around the world at a clip, but the rest of them are a waste of air space as far as I'm concerned - especially the interminable police reality shows like 'The First 48' and others of that genre. And I can't wait until 'Survivor' bites the dust - the people on that show are just plain mean-spirited! Anyone here feel the way I do?

Yes, Yes, Yes! I DO like some of the "follow the family" reality shows, though.
Little People, Big World, and Jon and Kate, Plus 8. I love the interaction between the family members! Pretty entertaining!

Reality TV shows bring words to mind that would make me ban myself if I posted them. It's the same with shows like Jerry Springer and Oprah (we have more than our fair share of those over here as well). I really do not see the point in people parading themselves and their problems in front of millions of other people just to have their 15 minutes of fame.

Can't stand Big Brother and the like, but I do enjoy X-factor and Dancing on Ice.

I was disturbed last night. I am disturbed most of the time but that's another thing. I was watching 'Supersize vs Superskinny'. That's a show that worries me a bit, they take two people at opposite ends of the weight scale and get them to swop diets for a week, under the supervision of an oh so charming TV doctor. Anyway, last night they introduced four girls and women who were suffering from, or recovering from, anorexia, and they will show their progress over the weeks.

It was stressed on the show that anorexia is a complex mental illness, and I was deeply uneasy about these people appearing as part of a TV show in the name of entertainment.

It seems to me that a lot of people who appear on these shows are in need of some sort of professional therapy, and at times it feels uncomfortably like the old days of people going to view the patients in Bedlam as a Sunday afternoon outing.

Plus, with things like Big Brother, how is that real? I mean, in what other circumstances would a dozen complete strangers be locked up together for weeks on end with no real work, no TV, no books. It'd drive us all demented in the end and I'm sure some of the people who go on there are halfway there to start with.

I enjoy some reality tv, I have to say. I do watch Survivor and American Idol on occasion, but I wouldn't really say I enjoy those ones. I've recently gotten into Hell's Kitchen. It's entertaining, and it's all about the competition, doesn't end up being all about the friendships among the contestants like on Survivor.

Oh, and I forgot What Not to Wear. That's kinda reality tv-ish and I enjoy that :)

I like the Amazing Race a lot.

Somewhat into Big Brother U.S., mostly because I found Dr. Will a interesting character to watch operate. Same with Evil. Not that interesting without that type of character in the house.

One show I really liked over the summer, which had what appeared to be one of the most ridiculous premises, was, I might not have the exact name here, Help, I'm on a Japanese Game Show.

The contestants didn't know what the format of the show was going to be or even that it was in Japan.

They used a real game show filmed in Tokyo, and the stunts were all zany.

But each episode the contenstans lived in a house together and had a mother figure. The mother would teach them different aspects of Japanese culture. The rewards or penalties also dealt with interesting bits of history, culture and modern life in Japan. All contestants seemed thrilled to have the opportunity to have the experience and learn as much as they did about Japan.

That sounds interesting BX, a little better than the usual lowest common denominator show.

Speaking of lowest common denominator, we have a series called Paris Hilton's New Best British Friend starting tomorrow. I understand you have already had the American version. Thanks. Thanks a lot.

Guitar Goddess, I'm a fan of 'What Not to Wear', too, but if it's reality TV it at least is positive because it helps women to make the most of themselves. The only physical change the show effects in the women is a change in hair style and teaching them how to apply make-up to enhance their looks. In a world obsessed with 'thin' and plastic surgery, 'WNTW' helps women of all shapes and ages to great dollops of self-esteem.

Shows like 'Survivor' and 'Big Brother'on the other hand bring out the worst in people. The people on shows like that exhibit bad behaviour - they're mean, manipulative, back-biting, and often cruel.

Sally, I followed the sounds of barrels being scraped, and stumbled upon this:

The hotel manager is going to be happy though - daily rates in his hotel start at £155. Got to pay for that £70 million refurbishment somehow!

No, really Lesley, I've done some terrible things in my life but I couldn't sit through more than about 30 seconds of that.

It's wonderful, isn't it, Sally? Brings a whole new meaning to the word Shallow. Not to mention Desperate.

The only one I'd watch is the one where all the talentless nobodies that have unjustly been given more than the 15 seconds of fame that they deserve are put in a huge fleet of buses that are then then driven constantly round the M25 until they expire from the lack of the oxygen of publicity that they all crave. They don't have to even film it, just do it for those of us who desire a return to non-shallow and desparate TV, and shudder at the sound of the bottom of barrels being scraped by vapid schedule planners.

my favorite reality tv shows are the bachelor(gosh, none of the girls are "the one" for jason) parental controls(its not really reality, its just ppl with bad acting!) the hills(gotta watch the hills!) true beauty(the ppl on the show disgust me!) and american idol, which is part reality. reality shows can b so dramatic. it kinda makes me sick. yikes!

Sammy, you're new to FunTrivia (welcome, by the way) so a word to the wise - we don't use chatspeak on these boards.

Its true, we are discouraged from using chatspeak on the boards, which is redundant in my case anyway as I dont know any, I take the time and the effort to type the full words. Your points made are good though, there are reality shows and there are reality shows. I wonder if they will do a series on Jade Goody's inevitable decline, I hope not, the woman must have at least one bone of integrity in her body.

Mostly I agree with Cym. I really miss regular sitcom shows :( But I have to admit to a real fondness for American Idol mostly cause I love music and some of them are really talented. But the ones that enjoy debasing humans, like Fear Factor, and the ones about large people losing weight are just wrong. I think the reason we have so many reality shows now is imagination has gone down the drain and it is easier to put a bunch of people on a reality show than to write a story line.

reality tv shows should be moved to pay for view only, then lets see viewing figures for them, I am not a fan of this dross. Some want more than their 15 minutes of fame.

I think that's a great idea, Gary. Let's pitch that one to the networks! Mind you, if FOX in the US agreed to do that, they'd have holes in their program schedules large enough to dock the QEII!

I'm so cynical, that I'm convinced every so-called reality show is scripted. I prefer dramatic series. Not a big fan of U.S. sitcoms (all the good ones were canceled), with the canned laugh tracks.

The funniest reality show, conceptually, has to be "Parking Wars", on A&E, here in the U.S. Why on earth would anyone want to watch people go to the impound lot to retrieve their cars? Following ticket writers around the city? Chasing scofflaws?

Season 2 Premiere Description: "A woman loses her car keys at the impound lot." Too bad I missed that one.
