Subject: Not all celebrities are a waste of space

Some celebrities use their fame and fortune to fund and promote humanitarian cause. Which celebrity do you most admire for their involvement in paricular causes? My hat is off to Elizabeth Taylor who has raised millions to fund AIDS research and education, to the late Paul Newman for his work with literacy and other humanitarian programs (all profits from his line of salad dressings go to charities), to Michael J. Fox for his advocacy on behalf of Parkinson's Disease victims (admittedly, he has a vested interest, but he could be just sitting back and whining instead of fighting the good fight). There are many others. Who's your pick?

Frankie Vaughan, famous for his singing: less famous for the time and money he poured into boys' clubs, and for his work with juvenile delinquents, notably armed gangs in Glasgow.

And (there'll be complaints!) Jade Goody, for turning her personal tragedy to greater good - not sitting in the corner sobbing.

Lesley, you'll get no complaints from me on the Goody front. I hadn't a clue who she was until the thread popped up on her and I read about her. Seems to me she took a very positive approach to her imminent death and did not go gentle into that good night but made people pay attention. If she helped to save only one young woman from undergoing the same painful experience, she did some good on this earth.

Leonardo DiCaprio.
He helps out so much with the environment and stuff. He's someone to look up to and follow.

His movies arn't half bad either. :) who doesn't love titanic?

Cymruambyth, I think she'll have saved more than one. She had a huge effect on public awareness and on the number of young women going for tests, who might not otherwise have bothered. It would be good if the effect persisted without anyone else going through what she went through.

Who doesn't love Titanic? Er... me? I haven't watched it and have no desire to watch it. Nothing wrong with DiCaprio. Just don't want to watch the film.

We have made these people celebrities. So, in effect, some of that money they are giving away is, in reality, our money. Think about it. Have you never visited a sick person in the hospital? Have you never given to a food pantry? You don't have to be a celebrity to do those things. It's just that the celebrities get the fanfare while the ordinary person like you and me does it every day without recognition. They have the money to give, don't they? And it makes a fantastic photo opportunity and a tax write-off to boot!

My exceptions from the list given would be Michael J. Fox and Paul Newman. Both focused on the cause, not on themselves. Michael J. Fox refuses to sit on the side lines and suffer in silence. He is out there as a personal advocate. Both he and Paul Newman served without fanfare. They are the true humanitarians.

The point is though - they earned that money and it doesn't matter where it came from - they don't have to give anything back to society if they don't want. That's why it is worth noting those who do (and I don't doubt for a second that many celebrities give a lot of money to charities etc. secretly).

Bill Gates for his donations to fighting off malaria in Africa springs to mind. I think I will call him a celebrity :)

Add me to the list of non-lovers of 'Titanic'. If you want to see a good film on that subject, rent 'A Night to Remember' starring Kenneth More.

Jonno, I agree - celebrities may have achieved their status and wealth because we've paid to see their movies, concerts, bought their records and so forth, but you're right - they don't have to do diddely squat if they don't want to get involved and contribute to causes. Thise who do deserve a pat on the back.

One of the major celebrities of his day was Andrew Carnegie, the Scottish-born 19th century American enterpreneur who made billions in steel and other manufacturing and transportation enterprises, yet he gave most of his money away - founding libraries all over the world, colleges, etc. He never drew a salary of more than $50,000.00 p.a. Similarly, American businessman Warren Buffet who has more money than God gives millions to charities all over the world and doesn't live high off the hog.

I have to say Jerry Lewis, because of his dedication. He has been doing the Labor Day telethon for years and years.

How about Ashton Kutcher? For donating all that money and malaria nets for Africa.

Angelina jolie, for her work for the united nations, also the adoption of three of her children, if a celebrity can adopt and gave a child a good home that's got to be a good thing, plus she has given millions of dollars to the orphanage's these children where adopted from, to gave other children a good start in life :)

i think most celebrities give of themselves more than we realise. Some more publically then others but also there are a number of celebs who move around more privately when contributing. there are too many to list right now but i've been reading about christina applegate and her experience with breast cancer and her efforts to bring more awareness to this horrible disease which affects so many women.

Among my favorite celebrity humanitarians is Monty Hall, the host and co-creator of "Let's Make A Deal". He has helped raise millions in his lifetime for children's charities. Another is Chris Paul, the point guard of the New Orleans Hornets, who was very visible in his efforts as the city rebounded from Hurricane Katrina. He's a North Carolina native - Winston-Salem, specifically - who adopted New Orleans as his own and has been a very positive influence.
