Hi, Professer. If I had known that he was born in Croydon, I would have included him in my recent quiz on the town. The Wicker Man, is one of my favourite films. Regards Ian Reply #1. Nov 16 09, 11:13 AM |

It's interesting that Edward Woodward never warranted a knighthood, despite being yet another of that outstanding group of British actors with whom I grew up. John Thaw was also of that grouping, as well as Roy Marsden. They contributed greatly to the quality of British television programing, and now seem irreplaceable, or perhaps old age clouds my thinking. Reply #2. Nov 16 09, 11:14 AM |

I liked the Equalizer back in the 80s. Good show. RIP Mr. Woodward Reply #3. Nov 16 09, 11:18 AM |

Elizabeth, your thinking is just fine! Edward Woodward will always be 'Mr. Callan' for me. I remember his 'smelly friend' Lonely, and his love of lead toy soldiers. Iconic series - IMHO. By all accounts,he was also a superb Shakespearian actor. RIP. Reply #4. Nov 18 09, 7:47 AM |

I've got to agree with you Redviking. Edward will always be Callan and Russell Hunter was also great at Lonely. Edward was a great actor and gave 110% to everything he did. He will be a great loss to tv and theatre. Reply #5. Nov 18 09, 5:08 PM |

Yes, and (to be trivial) really kept in great shape in his 60s and 70s. Will today's stars look as good? Reply #6. Nov 18 09, 5:38 PM |

Edward Woodward was a fine actor and had a reputation in the both the theatre and film worlds of being a team player, easy to get along with, and not at all stuck on himself. He could always be relied upon to turn in a fine performance. Two standout Woodward roles for me: Neil Howie in 'The Wicker Man' and the title role in 'Breaker Morant' - both brilliant pieces of work! RIP, Mr. Woodward, (Anyone beside me remember this old chestnut: Q: Why does Edward Woodward have so many Ds in his name? A: Because Ewar Woowar would sound silly! Reply #7. Nov 18 09, 5:56 PM |

Have another old chestnut: Q What do you call a man with three pieces of wood on his head? A Edwood Woodwood. Yes, he was one of the greats, and he will not be easily replaced. Reply #8. Nov 18 09, 8:24 PM |

I hadn't seen this one. I will miss him. I loved the Equalizer series, and Breaker Morant is a beautiful film. I will look him up on IMDB and see what else I've seen and have yet to see. Sue Reply #10. Dec 07 09, 3:01 PM |

I remember watching him in the TV series "Callan". What a crime show that was! He was also fantastic in the Boar war film "Breaker Morant". Apart from his acting ability, he also possessed a fine voice. Reply #12. Feb 11 10, 11:07 PM |

Redwaldo, you meant the Boer War, right, or was that a reference to the Bay of Pigs debacle? Reply #13. Feb 16 10, 4:13 PM |
