It's only a rumour; nothing will be confirmed until June. I'd like to see the whole system done away with. Reply #3. Mar 04 11, 11:56 AM |

An Oscar is enough, I should think. I'm not struck on all the civil servants getting gongs.....After all they are just doing what they are getting paid to do Reply #4. Mar 04 11, 3:01 PM |

I don't like the idea of someone being knighted for movies or music. To me it cheapens the state of knighthood. Reply #5. Mar 04 11, 3:29 PM |

He can always trot off to an over priced restaurant if he feels the need to be called 'sir' - or to a nice cheap cosy cafe if he prefers being called 'luvvie'. Reply #6. Mar 04 11, 3:34 PM |

Seems to me that knighthoods and damehoods get handed out to actors/singers/celebs of any sort for their contributions to the UK economy. I'm still wondering why Elizabeth Taylor ever did for the UK, economically or otherwise, to warrant her getting the tap on the shoulder. Warning: What would you replace the monarchy with? Picking presidents is a dicey business these days - look around the world at the less-than-glowing examples. No thanks, I'd rather keep the monarchy. They look nice on the money and the postage stamps. Reply #8. Mar 05 11, 9:38 AM |

Warning? What would I replace the monarchy with? Does it,in the 21st.Century,need replacing with anything/anyone? We have regular elections here. Then the people of Great Britain, including the tax-payers,have the chance to choose who govern us - for better or worse. "No thanks,I'd rather keep the monarchy"? So,as a Canadian citizen, how much do you contribute to the upkeep of the Royal Family - and the legions of 'hangers-on'? Have you ever paid UK taxes? As to the money and stamps, perhaps we could honour real Britons, that have earned their place in History? The very concept of 'Royalty' is positively medieval,in this day and age - IMO. Perhaps the government could earn themselves a 'Queen's Award For Export' - and export the whole Royal Family to Canada! Reply #9. Mar 05 11, 2:00 PM |

The very concept of 'Royalty' is positively medieval,in this day and age hmmm... Many thousands of man and women (our sons daughters, husbands and wives) are spending this very evening serving our Queen and fighting for our safety in lands far and wide, Please don’t try to take away what makes us British and different in this world of the disaffected and disingenuous. God bless her, at times she is all we have as a nation to hold on to, Reply #10. Mar 05 11, 2:33 PM |

Although I am an anti-monarchist this thread was about a Knighthood for Colin Firth and other undeserving people. How sad s-m-w to see such a fawning comment in this day and age, will you still feel the same when Charlie boy is on the throne with Queen Camilla? If ever there was a case for getting rid of them he is it. Reply #13. Mar 05 11, 10:28 PM |

Re post 10. But the Queen doesn't send any one off to war. The Government packs them off and the government chooses who gets the gongs, the Queen's job is to pin the medals on. Reply #14. Mar 06 11, 2:46 AM |

"I don't like the idea of someone being knighted for movies or music. To me it cheapens the state of knighthood." I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm a very big Colin Firth fan but I can't see that being able to act makes one worthy of a knighthood. In my humble opinion, knighthoods should be bestowed for people who really make a (positive) difference to our world - for example, a doctor who discovers a cure for diabetes. Elton John and Bob Geldof, received theirs for their considerable charitable work - fair enough. But Mick Jagger has no known record of charity work or public service. And why Mick Jagger and not the other members of the band? I am a Rolling Stones fan but I really don't think he deserved a knighthood. Reply #15. Mar 06 11, 2:58 AM |

I have read conflicting reports about David Niven. Was he knighted? If not I think he should have been because like many actors of his day he also served the military with honors. Reply #17. Mar 06 11, 4:45 AM |

Having thought about this I can't help but say our serving the Queen is no different to an American serving the flag. Do you call that sad? Reply #19. Mar 06 11, 7:29 AM |

I'm surprised you can't see the difference between serving a nation, as represented by a flag, or an individual. Reply #20. Mar 06 11, 7:57 AM |
