Subject: Membership of Service clubs

Are any other FTers members of any of the various Service Clubs.. Rotary, Lions etc.
Reason I'm asking is that I have just come home from a Lions District Convention - over 200 members from more than 80 clubs. The event was held in Albany Western Australia. One of the things I found empowering was that so many members were of various abilities - wheelchair bound, using canes or crutches, visually and hearing impaired, yet all participating equally in their various clubs, and in the Convention.
Makes me very proud to be an Aussie Lion.

No, I'm not a member of anything like this, but I would like to join you in my admiration of people who are.

And to thank you personally for a thread title that doesn't have the word "favourite" in it.

Thanks on both counts, Lesley.
One thing that really impressed me was a man who received a 50 year service award. How amazing is that !

It is a sad fact that such organizations as Lions, Rotary Kinsmen, Jaycees, Masons, etc. are not attracting membership nowadays. Is there a correlation to the decline in membership in Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Cubs, religious congregations of all faiths? I applaud all those who reach beyond themselves in service to others.

Hmmm - interesting question. I always thought children joined Scout and Guide groups for the friendship, activities, camping trips, and hadn't thought beyond that. I wonder how many of them join for the religious element, and actively look forward to church parades?

I am a Past Honored Queen in Jobs Daughters. Sadly, our city's group has shrunk in recent years to the point that they had to combine with a group from a nearby city, in order to have enough members to open the doors. People don't seem to want to take the time anymore....

I was a Jaycee-ette (State President) and then a Jaycee. I think with children so involved in sports and after school activities, it is difficult for folks to become involved. Programs and projects take time to plan and implement.

In my hometown I'm apart of a support group for the visually impaired & the blind. We try to protom awarness that the sighted impaired community can be active in their homes, neighborhoods, & even in our communities.

Jobs Daughters is a service organization for girls ages 11 - 21 who are descendants of a man who belonged/belongs to the Masons. (It can be a father, uncle, great-great grandpa...just so long as it is a relative.) The equivalent group for boys is called DeMolay. We used to have meetings twice a month and had service projects like volunteering at the local retirement home or selling hot dogs and cotton candy for charity.

One of my daughters-in-law was also a Past Honored Queen of the Job's Daughters when my son met her. My uncle was a Mason and his three sons were in DeMolay.
