Subject: Sauce Or Gravy??

To fellow pasta lovers and Italians out there. When you mama or nonna made pasta on Sunday(or any day) did she call it sauce or gravy?? We called it gravy!

IT IS SAUCE! LOL. Sauce is made of tomatoes and put on pasta. Gravy is brown and used to spruce up meat. No if's and or butt's. I have this conversation with my girlfriend's father all the time. Hehehe.

In an Italian household it is tomato sause if there is no meat and gravy when there is (meatballs, sausage etc)

In my Italian household (well, my grandmother's household...) it's sauce whether it's meatless or not. Then again, she never makes a meat sauce bolognese-style, pasta is always served without meat, the meatballs can be eaten on the side.

Put me down in the sauce column. I make a dandy Spaghetti Bolognese and the sauce bears no resemblance to gravy, which is brown and made with meat drippings, flour and water.

They are both ladled on but I ladle sauce on pasta and gravy on my meat and potatoes.

I've always been taught that gravy is made from meat stock and sauce is anything else.

Sauce is for pasta, gravy is meat-based. This must be regional Italian.

I think it is regional Italian. A family friend also calls it Zuga. Did anyone else have pine nuts and currents or raisins in their meatballs?? We also used to have 3 kinds of sausage and neck bones. Maybe thats why is was gravy and not sauce, there was a lot of meat in it.But at Christmas my mom makes what she calls lobster gravy its a tomato sauce with chunks of lobster and a lot of red pepper, otherwise known as lobster fra diavlo.

We always called it sauce. Either it was red or alfredo. Alfredo had chicken and red had ground turkey in it.

Oh yeah...... I remember the pine nuts (pignolas - although I hated them then and still hate them now) and the currants (I like those and still do). And my grandfather was from Naples, my grandmother from Trieste - and it was GRAVY and it still is GRAVY.

When we have pasta the stuff that goes on top is what we call sauce.

For me, sauce goes on pasta and gravy on meat. But then again, there's Bearnaise sauce, with I love on filet mignon.
