I have yet to try squirrel, but I do like trying unusual meats. The most unusual for me were ostrich steak, alligator tail, shark fin, and octopus. I know I had something even stranger once, but I cannot recall what it was. I'll have to ask my family and see if they remember. :) Reply #1. Oct 12 12, 3:45 PM |

I was in Belgium, on a 'freebie' trip, staying at a wonderful hotel. The first evening, it was a set menu, the starter arrived, it was like a type of paté. It was delicious, everybody loved it, some had seconds! I must admit, my stomach churned, as did quite a few others, when we discovered it was lambs brains in jelly! I have eaten shark and octopus, had pickled partridge and BBQ pigeon, but the lambs brains in jelly is deffo one I couldn't eat again! Reply #3. Oct 12 12, 4:01 PM |

Gross, remember my stepdad telling me that Sunday dinner was chicken, very dubiously took a mouthful, to be told i was eating rabbit. Awful, never eaten meat since. Reply #4. Oct 12 12, 4:13 PM |

My sister-in-law's family in Fort Necessity, Louisiana eat squirrel. They have pecan trees and the squirrels are plentiful. My brother-in law is visiting there now and has eaten frog legs while there. He is bringing back some alligator sausage. No, I will not try it. Reply #5. Oct 12 12, 6:07 PM |

The most unusual for me were frog legs and turtle soup, both enjoyed when I was a pre-teen. I highly doubt I'd try either of them now. Maybe the turtle soup...but probably not. Reply #6. Oct 12 12, 7:09 PM |

Squirrel was a staple when I was growing up. It's very tasty. Gray squirrels are better than fox squirrels. You have to make sure you skin them right. The giblets were used in dumplings, and I was very fond of the heads - tongue, cheek meat and brains. Squirrel is always fried; I don't think it would taste good grilled or boiled. Reply #7. I have had squirrel and rabbit before. My dad and his friend used to hunt small game when I was a kid. Reply #8. Oct 14 12, 12:46 AM |

While we ate squirrel and rabbit, we did NOT eat possums, raccoons, etc. I am not fond of venison, which must be the most overrated meat in the world. Give me a plate of squirrel over a platter of deer meat any day. Reply #9. Oct 14 12, 4:50 PM |

I remember my parents talking about eating squirrel Supposedly cracking open the skull and eating the brains was the best part. They were raised in Oklahoma. Thank goodness they never tried to feed us squirrels. All we had in the San Joaquin valley were inedible ground squirrels or they would probably fed they to us. I am not sure if I ate the jackrabbits that were cooked on occasion but we did eat tame rabbits regularly. Reply #10. Oct 14 12, 5:46 PM |

I grew up in Alaska, and my Dad and Uncles hunted Moose. It filled the freezer, for the year. I liked Moose, but Caribu was not my fave. I remember as a kid, (3 or 4) we lived in Bethel, and if the plane didn't come from Anchorage, we ate Ptarmigan...for a month or so...;) Reply #12. Oct 14 12, 6:06 PM |

I've tried alligator, venison, elk, bear and rabbit. Never tried squirrel or raccoon though I understand raccoon tastes like dark meat turkey. Reply #15. Oct 15 12, 9:31 AM |

I worked at a huge truck stop/gas station/convenience store/restaurant in Virginia. Sometimes we served scrapple/mystery meat. At my suggestion we called it the roadkill special. It sold very well. I never touched it. I don't like mysteries in my stomach. Reply #16. Oct 15 12, 7:20 PM |

No, other than shark meat, once, venison, once and frog legs, once! That was when I was much younger, I don't eat any meat other than fish, chicken, turkey and beef, that's sad enough. Reply #17. Oct 19 12, 1:44 AM |

I'd try it if given the chance. It's not very common in its non-alive form though. Reply #18. Oct 20 12, 1:33 PM |

Squirrels were a staple food of early America. That's why pioneers and frontiersmen called their rifles "squirrel guns." Reply #19. Oct 20 12, 2:52 PM |
