How come out of nine moderators not one of you can give an answer to the previous question asked here? This is an answer that I would like to know, also. Reply #1. May 07 12, 7:45 PM |

I believe that the scoring system increases and decreases rating by your fininshing rank in the hour's competition. That is, ranking in the top half of the number of players will increase your score while scoring in the second half will lower your score. The more polar you get to either extreme, the more dramatic the effect will be on your rating. It is possible that all players in an hour score perfectly, but half will have their scores actually DECREASE. That is at least my rough understanding of the ELO scoring system that is used. The Easy Game doesn't use the ELO system for ranking. It ranks according to a combination of average scores and total points. Your points depend on the number of questions correct and the time it takes so if you get 10 questions correct all in about the same time your average score stays the same and your total points go up. If you then score 9/10 your average score drops dramatically (by 10 points) - in the easy game, people score highly so in the early part of the month a drop in your average score will lead to a drop of many places in the Average Score Rankings. When you have played 100s rather than 10s of games the effect on your average score is less and it might not affect your average score ranking at all. Reply #3. May 21 12, 4:07 AM |

...and just to prove what Bucknallbabe has said you only have to look at my score. Over the last five games my average score has been 975 which is pretty much consistent over the past few weeks. Having played 297 games (3rd best) my average rank should be around 495 added with my point rank of 493 = 988. But I'm way down in 89th place and not the top five (and out of badge contention), why? Well I've had a couple of time shockers in a few games, a number of 9's and even an 8 (eek). This means that my current high scoring games don't have too much of an impact on my overall score due to the high number of games I've played. Reply #4. May 22 12, 2:43 AM |

I don't understand the scoring at all (for the monthly badge(s), also for the hard game) Could somebody please explain to me in simple words, basically, is it more important to play as many games as possible, or would it be more effective if I only played the categories I know that I'm good at, so my average score will be higher? Keeping your average as high as possible is very important, so play your best categories. But you need to play just enough games to keep your total points up with the rest. So it's a bit of a blend. Reply #6. Feb 21 13, 9:27 AM |

Thanks so much, that helps a lot. In this case, now I know, not to play sports, movies and TV, because these categories always drag me down. Reply #7. Feb 21 13, 10:03 AM |

I totally agree with Patty--in the Easy game as soon as you miss one or two questions in a set your score does drop at least one if not more points. Kind of hard to figure out. Reply #8. Mar 01 13, 6:16 PM |

Well, yep. Again, thanks a lot for the advise. Since finding out, I'm doing much better :-) Reply #9. Mar 03 13, 1:57 AM |

Anybody have any ideas how I lost one half of a rating point by coming in 3rd out of 46 Champs? Sometimes I will come in 8/10 out of 46 and lose nothing. Seems weird to me. Thanks... Reply #10. May 22 13, 2:40 PM |

I find it hard to believe that you lose nothing with 8/10... The scoring system seems rather touchy; but it depends on who was 1st and 2nd. If they are rated higher than you, you're likely to still move up. If they're rated less, you'll lose some, they'll gain some. Reply #11. Jun 11 13, 11:50 AM |

To make the most sense out of the scoring method in the hourly games section, my advice is to keep track of it yourself with your own pen and paper, as I do. When I did this I kept track of how many times I finished in the top half or avg. rankings as opposed to the lower half rankings. I found that a little more than 60% of the time I finish in the avg. or better rankings and 40% of the time I don't. Considering the extreme grade scale they use, if anyone can finish in the top half over 50% of the times they play, in my opinion you are doing well. The grade scale they use for ranking people puts much emphasis on being a speed demon. Sometimes I'll see a perfect 10/10 accuracy at the bottom of the rankings, because the person may have been just a minute or two slower than the other person with a 10/10. This is in fact, is nothing to stress or fret over in the real academic cognitive world. In the 14 years I was in school not one time did a teacher ever get out a stopwatch and time students racing each other during a pop quiz or test. Again, as long as a student isn't moving at a complete snail's pace, a teacher in the real academic world won't care if you take a few minutes more than the next person. In fact most teachers probably encourage their students to double check their work before turning it in. So this trivia site grading scale is definately somewhat of a fantasy world of a grade scale and ranking system, hence the name "funtrivia". That's my insight on this. Reply #12.
