Subject: Greatest Movie Trilogies

What gets your vote as the greatest movie trilogies of all time?

I took a little liberties as some of them did have fourth + movies added on but you get what I am going for here. :)

In my opinion, this is how I would rank them:

1. Godfather trilogy (hands down, actually)
2. Bourne trilogy
3. Lord of the Rings trilogy
4. Indiana Jones trilogy
5. Dollars Trilogy (Sergio Leone)
6. Star Wars trilogy (I am not a Star Wars fan but I recognize
7. Alien trilogy (well, if you eliminate Alien 3)
8. Die Hard trilogy (the last one doesn't count)
9. Beverly Hills Cop trilogy (despite the third travesty)
10. Vacation Trilogy (nixing Vegas Vacation of course)

I wish I could agree with you about the "Godfather" films, but sadly the first two are let down by the third, which is woefully poor. I usually try to pretend it doesn't exist.

For consistency of quality and overarching vision, the "Lord of the Rings" films probably has the edge - but they are really one long film divided into three for reasons of length (you couldn't really watch one without having seen the others).

Otherwise, again for reasons of consistency across all three films, the original "Star Wars" Trilogy is hard to beat. And unusually for film trilogies, the second is much the best.

Incidentally, I think the "Back to the Future" trilogy deserves a place in any list (despite a poor middle instalment). Certainly miles better than "Beverley Hills Cop".

But I agree that if "Godfather III" had been as good as the first two, it would have been no contest.

Totally agree about Back to the Future - I don't even mind the second movie all that much. The part where they weaved the story into the events of the first movie had its moments.

Schoonie's original list is great, but I would only mention Kieslowski's Three Colours Trilogy (Blue, White and Red). Great stuff, especially "Red".

You got me about Godfather III - still, though, I think the first two are so good, they more than negate the cruddiness of the 3rd.

To be honest, I was having a little trouble rounding out that top 10! The Vacation series should also be above Beverly Hills Cop though, especially considering BHC3, which probably goes down as one of the worst movies of all time. I always like to joke that I know I'm getting old when I remember when Eddie Murphy was actually funny.

Forgot about Back to the Future movies. I've only seen the 1st one but it was definitely an enjoyable movie. You're right, though, I should have thrown them on that list.

Haven't seen the Colors trilogy. You probably have a point there. Have heard they are great movies though.

Even though I dislike the third installment, the Godfather trilogy is the greatest trilogy of all time.

Eh, "Lord of the Rings" is one movie. But okay, whatever.

"Back to the Future" is awesome, and even though "Jurassic Park II and III" were awful, #1 was good enough to make up for that.

No, Lord of the Rings is not one movie. It is 3 books (well, technically 6) and it is 3 movies.

There is only one 'trilogy' as far as I'm concerned. That is the "Star Wars" trilogy. I am not saying that I think they are the best movies on that list, but when I think of trilogy, I always think "Star Wars."

Hehe I like Rush Hour except the 3rd one was crappy.

I like Star Wars too.

Not to say it's the "best" movie trilogy ever, by a long shot, but my "favorite" is Star Wars. It's just...like comfort food. Although recently I've seen it too much and have been avoiding it on TV. :)

After that, Terminator & Matrix (sans blood & gore, anyway). All of the Jurassic Park movies would have to go on the list also. I like the first two Bourne movies, but I haven't seen the third yet.

I'm saving The Godfather films for a time when I will need something awesome to fill some dire hours.

Just to show how people have different tastes, the second installment of the Back to the Future trilogy is actually my favourite! I like the third part least. The Matrix has been mentioned now, but the first one is one of my all time favourite movies... the next two are awful (to me anyway). I am a big Star Wars nut, so I do enjoy the Star Wars trilogy. I also have quite definite requirements for my true appreciation of a film, Star Wars is too shallow to ever be considered one of the greatest films (or film series) for me. The recent LOTR trilogy is good, very good.

Just to throw another couple in, Mad Max anyone? Or how about the Scream movies! Oh! Just remembered another, Pirates of the Caribbean. I have recently watched the first two of these and looking forward to the third. First is excellent, second is pretty good.

How in the world did I ever forget the Mad Max movies? Sigh... just really off my game apparently. The first two are great. Haven't seen the third one in a long time, though, so have kind of forgotten it. But shoot, with what you guys are reminding of, my list is way off! :)

Lord of the Rings is the best in my opinion.

Putting the Back to the Future trilogy to clear the throat of the post. So gullible, McFly.

Would've put the 'Jaws' trilogy had the fourth movie not ruined the utter coolness of the third.

Satisfied with the X-men and Spiderman flicks so far, though it looks like they'll be squeezing out another Spidey sequel along with the X-men prequels.

The Fire Water Earth trilogy would be in my top 10, along with Mad Max.

Purely for entertainment value, the Evil Dead trilogy, the Naked Gun films and Richard Lester's Musketeers trilogy, though the 3rd Musketeer film was tragic and caused him to quit directing.

Now I am REALLY getting upset with myself. How in the holy names of God, Satan, and Buddha did I EVER forget to throw in the Evil Dead Trilogy *weeping in embarrassment*. That would have been in my top 5 - no question.

Just a taste:

Re: Back to the Future. The second one is my favorite, I thought the third was weak.

Re: Evil Dead. I don't think it really qualifies as a trilogy. The second one is almost a remake of the first one.

But, since we're talking zombies, what about Romero's Dead trilogy (night of the living, dawn of, day of)? I haven't seen Land of, yet.

OK, here's a trilogy from the 50s.
Creature From the Black Lagoon
Revenge of the Creature and
The Creature Walks Among Us.

All entertaining movies of the genre. Clint Eastwood had a small (uncredited) part in Revenge of the Creature.
