Subject: Umbrellas and other great inventions

What do you think is the greatest (manmade) invention ever? I'm not talking about T.V's and washing machines; I mean things like the humble paperclip, the biro pen, the umbrella.

What inventions do you think we take for granted too much?

The toothbrush maybe. How did they clean their teeth prior to this I wonder?

The roof - without them houses would be rubbish.

The electric can opener! My mam has arthritis and it's probably the one single thing she appreciates most (apart from artificial joints that it!)

Bread - how could someone take corn, grind it, let it yeast and then bake it? It´s highly admirable.

The Wall! (Not the Pink Floyd album, but a proper wall). Without walls houses would be even more rubbish - and roofs would be floors.

And butter - why did someone need to start beating milk?

How about clothes - or shoes, life would be pretty cruddy without them aswell, or fire, clean water supplies or the written word, come to think of it.

Plus there are abstract inventions like Music/ Art/ Poetry/ Literature etc. All are valid, and all were invented at one point. (It makes you wonder... who was the first person to invent Music - and what the Hell was he thinking of to create such an art form?).

Perhaps she started singing so her voice would carry better when she called the children in?

There's a theory that it's inbuilt. Children all over the world use the same two notes, just like Nelson Muntz.

Hmm good point - though mocking (Nelson style, is more bird impersonation aka cuckoo). I was thinking more about taking random tones and then creating Music out of it - as in the first piece of Music where some old stone-age guy went - 'if only someone would invent the computer i'd download that onto my mammoth pod'.

Mouldy; have you ever heard a didgeridoo being played? Also the sounds of Tibetan monks chanting? I'm not having a dig at your logic.Just wanted to point out the concept of 'music' is an interesting evolution.Rhythm, tempo and so on.

And never mind the person who invented the umbrella; what about the clever little soul who invented the clip-thingy that holds your umbrella open? Pity it always manages to pinch my fingers when I'm releasing it!

One of my favourite inventions are the biros than come with 4 colours inside the one pen. You just click down the thingy for the colour you want and hey presto! You were writing in blue and now you have green! What'll they think of next:-)

What about the pencils with the little rubber bits on the end?

To quote: "... who was the first person to invent Music"

I don´t think Music etc. are inventions, they are natural abilities of people in my opinion. My children kind of sang in their prams and started scribbling as soon as they could keep a pencil in their hands.
I try to teach my dogs to sing - no results yet.

Me too. Folk music all over the world uses the same pentatonic scale. So either it's inbuilt, or it wasn't but it is now.

We have these things here called 'command hooks'.
The usual plastic hooks that you stick onto the wall, once on are there forever (And if you try to take them off they take a chunk of paint with it!). But 'command hooks' come off without the hassle and can be used again and again and again.
Wonderful:-)

I think that combs and brushes are a great invention.
Just think of how we would all look without the use of
these each day.
And what about our eating utensils. In some countries they
still eat most things with their fingers and out of common
serving dishes.

Beds - where's the statue to the genius who invented beds with comfy mattresses?

And coffee, hot chocolate, tea - who was the brilliant bird who first had the idea of mashing up those beans or drying those leaves and creating such life-giving brews?

What about the humanitarian who figured out that those ovoid shapes that kept popping out of birds could actually be used to make such things as scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, omelettes?

Who figured out that you could take wool from sheep and make cosy socks, sweaters, gloves, mitts, scarves - without which life in a Canadian winter would be unbearable?

Who first came up with idea of milking cows, grinding wheat to make flour and ultimately bread?

And then there's the ultimate genius who figured out how to make a nice glass of wine. Thank you!

How about sliced bread, much easier for making sandwiches.

As has been pointed out earlier, it was a brave person who first ate an Oyster/ Mushroom/ Big Mac/ Snail etc.
