Have heard that same theory for that day in 2012. Am not sure which time zone it will occur in first, though. GMT? Funny thing, though. The Earth has circled the Milky Way galaxy quite a few times and its survived every time so I think we can throw this into the year 2000 moment of doom trash pile. Could be a good way to make money from the gullible out of this, though. T-shirts, sign boards, things like that at the least. After all, it IS immoral to let suckers keep their money. ;-) Reply #1. I see no reason why the world will end in 2012. However, when it does end, I think it will be with a big bang! Nothing to do with humans either--just the expanding of the sun before it dies, and all of the heat-related issues as a result! Reply #2. Mar 26 09, 12:11 PM |

Many scientists have disproved this theory and countless theories on the end of the world. We truley will not know when it will end, but don't tell Nicolas Cage that. Reply #3. Mar 26 09, 3:40 PM |

I'll join the consensus. The whole 2012 thing is hogwash. The world will end when Heimdall blows the Gjallarhorn, and he's not going to do that until he's good and ready! Reply #4. Mar 26 09, 5:05 PM |

I think people misunderstand the Mayan calendar. The Mayans didn't say the world will end in 2012, but rather than come the autumnal equinox, the date will once again be aligned by their calendar to 0.0.0.0 - something which indicates a full circle of earth's orbital patterns in an alignment which doesn't happen very often. The Mayans were great astronomers. But if the world does come to an end that day, it probably will not be the grand apocalypse in the Judeo-Christian sense, unless it is directly caused by humans... There is a theory that the great calendar was only taken up to the approximate date of the winter solstice of 2012 because that is as far forward as they wanted to take it, its not a case that the world would end, it was a convenient termination point for them, I'm still planning on being here on 22nd December 2012 and will not be changing my plans one bit. The long count mathematically lasts for 5125 years, its the way it works and the start date of 3114 BC probably stemming from several earlier mesoamerican cultures and similar in concept to Archbishop Usher's notional date for the start of the Judaeo-Christian world, 2012 is the correct end date, it is possible that if they had survived until now, they would have worked on a new calendar to last for the next 5125 years, which would push the apocalypse back to 7137 AD, so we can relax lol. Paige, I'm in your camp. And by the time the sun gets around to imploding on itself, all life forms will long since have vanished from the face of the spinning blue planet anyway. I rather like Stu's theory, too. I must check up on those old Norse myths. Reply #7. Mar 26 09, 10:24 PM |

I've always found it amusing that whenever someone predicts the end of the world, his or her followers are always reported as stocking up on food, water and weapons, etc. What's the point? Reply #9. Apr 07 09, 6:32 PM |

I dunno. In Israel people stock up on milk and toilet paper whenever we fear we're not going to get to go food shopping for a while... Reply #12. Apr 08 09, 6:16 AM |

Personally, I don't believe it, but I'd like to. Although in the days leading up to Doomsday I may do whatever I want just in case we all die in a fiery hellstorm. Reply #14. Apr 08 09, 4:26 PM |

Well the end of the world is *obviously* going to come to an end when the LHC is fixed and particles are collided such that a black hole is created that consumes our entire solar system. Reply #15. Apr 08 09, 5:36 PM |

If I had looked over that sentence again I'd have realised that it doesn't make sense :) Correction: Well the end of the world is *obviously* going to come when the LHC is fixed and particles are collided such that a black hole is created that consumes our entire solar system. I've looked into many of these and technically we are not designed to know the future, even the weather forecasts are vague for the next day and unless something's actually on a collision course the Mayans knew no more than any other society in history. They may just have run out of fingers, which was what happened to me before calculators and I just had to give up. But humans have always been desperate to see ahead, and there's a whole industry making millions from pretending to know all sorts of events ahead, which are soon forgotten when they are wrong. If people want to spend their whole time looking ahead rather than concentrate all their attention in the present they are going to miss a lot. It's better to forget what's ahead as we can never get it right in advance, for big or small events. Too many variables. Reply #17. Apr 08 09, 7:53 PM |
