My old computer was a Dell with windows 98. My new computer has Vista & I don't know what brand it is because my mom & sister got it for me.

Dells--they have been a good brand for me. They have survived two kids and multiple virus attacks.

Um. I have four computers in my home that I use regularly.

Let's see. My primary desktop was a home-build, running Windows XP SP3 on a P4, 4 hard drives. It's held up quite well but I'm looking to do a fresh build this winter with either an intel i7 or an i5, five HDDs with multiple operating systems (Win 7, two different flavors of Linux and Snow Leopard if I can figure out how to make the Hackintosh guides mesh with GRUB.)

I have to be able to support all of them in various parts of my jobs, so having all of them accessible at home is quite useful.

The laptop is a Dell Inspiron 9 netbook with 10 GB solid state disk running Ubuntu Netbook Remix.

The home webserver is a tiny headless (no monitor) PC that I picked up for $99 to host sites that I'm currently developing before they go live. As most of my web dev clients are running on linux-based servers, my home server is also running a LAMP (Linux/apache/mysql/php) setup.

Finally, the media server is running Squeezebox and bridges wirelessly from the desktop PC upstairs to my stereo downstairs and streams music through every room.

I also have two computers in states of repair on the floor in the workshop and a couple of dead laptops that need to be either revived or recycled, but as none of them currently work I don't count them officially.

*grin*

The PC is a combination of my old Asus 40gb drive (almost full now) and a new set of Microsoft parts, which is actually slower (besides downloads as the cable is 10 times faster than the laptop connection) than the much newer Siemens laptop which has half the speed but double the hard drive. This is on XP and that is on Vista, which does seem to go down far less frequently.

That's funny, kscleaves! You sound like my son in law! Which usually means, I don't get any of it! :)

I have a Gateway, supplied and maintained by SIL.

Ms. Marrz, yes, I seem to have inherited the geek instincts from my dad. He always had several computers in various states of disassembly lying about his office. These days I tend to be the one giving him computer advice rather than the other way about, but I wouldn't be aware of any of it if he hadn't given me a strong nudge in that direction when I was quite young.

I have 2 computers, one is a Dell vista with cable hookup, the other is a Gateway XP with dial up. My daughter also has a laptop that she runs via a router.

I've got the same computer that I started with in 1999. Ok, it's had a new motherboard (several in fact), new sound and graphics cards, four new power supplies, a couple of new hard drives and I've added two DVD roms, but it's still the same computer :)

I've got a slow computer. My knowledge of it doesn't really get more technical than that. I'm really impressed by multi-lingual (computer speak) people like kscleaves, but I'm such a luddite that I don't even know if its slowness is related to age (6 years), to too much stuff on it, or some other configuration issue. So when I get some spare money (when!) I'll probably buy a new one and hope it'll be quicker.

Oh, it says Dell on the front, but apart from that I don't have a clue about Gb, ROM, RAM - and what was that romeomikegolf mentioned? - a 'motherboard'!

dsimpy, try doing a defrag, (it's not too hard I promise). Close all open programes, click on start (usually bottom left corner of the screen),put your cursor over All Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools.Look for Disc Defragmentation (or similar).Click on it and follow the prompts.Once it's working go and have a lie down, it may take a few hours depending on the size of the hard drive. This may give you a little bit more speed as it reorganises the files making it easier for your machine to find all the bits it needs. If that doesn't speed things up a bit it may be time to talk to Mr Barclaycard.

When you say it's slow do you mean it takes time to get on line or do you have to wait for your machine to do simple stuff like open and save things?

A faster way to get to the defragmenter (Windows) - click on Start, click on Help, type in defrag and you're there...

If the PC is slow, I'd run antivirus before the defrag.

If your computer is really slow, then maybe you need more RAM. But you have buy it, so instead try checking the free simple ways. Search up ways to speed up your computer on google or something.

Wow, thanks everybody for the advice! I did know about defrag, I once got someone to instal networked computers in a small NGO (not for profit) I set up, and he showed me - although when he offered to configure internal email between staff members I turned it down, saying we could just go and talk to each other, why would we email! That was probably short-sighted! Anyway, I probably should do another defrag, though I don't think that'll resolve it completely. It's slow to get going after switch on, and takes 'ages' for the browser to open - basically I allow 30 minutes in the morning to get on to FunTrivia from switch-on. Opening pages online takes ages sometimes. When I click to play a game, at least 5 seconds are on the clock before the questions appear - occasionally 105 seconds! Increasing the RAM, once I work out what that means, sounds like a good option. Anyway, thanks guys!

Hey RMG, when you say I should 'go and have a lie down' is this just while the defrag's happening, or a wider comment on my earlier bellicose posts?! LOL

My computer is a desktop PC with Windows XP. I'm hopelessly computer illiterate and haven't a clue when it comes to Computer-Speak and I'm on dial-up rather than high speed internet access. The nice boys at Computer Boulevard maintain it for me, and if I run into problems between routine maintenance visits, I call my brilliant son, the Geek, who walks me through the problem.

Workstations: Home-built system based on Athlon 6000+ dual core, 2 GB, 500 GB disk local on Windows XP.
Home file server: Custom-built Athlon 6400+ 2GB Linux box with 950 GB RAID 1 disk space. Also does mail, web and everything else I need on fixed IP subnet, so I'm pretty much my own ISP except for the actual line.

Mine is a 6 year cheapie that says Proview on the front. I have Windows XP. I didn't really know how to use a computer when I first got it and within two months it became unusuable to me. I had a guy who retired from IBM after 33 years straighten it out and haven't had any trouble with it since. It is slow.
