Subject: US Electrical code

In a previous life I was a sparkie in Australia. I believe in America the voltage is 110 volts or thereabouts. Ours is 240v. I often wonder if this lower voltage results in fewer electrocutions. I also wonder about the extra cost for larger switches and wiring as lower the voltage, higher the current which causes heat and thus more wiring. We use 1mm for lighing circuits and 1.5 mm for power.

I worked as an Engineer in the Maintenance Dept. at a local nursing home. We did a lot of things including electrical work.

Don't know that much about the code, but knew enough to do what needed to be done. If it was something we couldn't handle, we had licensed electricians come in.

I do recall the standard voltage for the resident rooms and such was 120 volts. However, most of the hallway lighting was 277 volts. Will never forget that number as I replaced many fixture ballasts that burned out!

In the U.S., you can lick your finger and test for a blown fuse. Wouldn't recommend that on 240v.
