On this day in 2001, New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania were attacked by terrorists who overtook the cockpits of some major airlines that flew into the World Trade Center in NYC, The Pentagon in DC and a field in Pennsylvania. Some passengers kept the terrorists from going any further to attack any other building and they gave their lives to save God knows how many others, very sad day in America. Reply #1121. On this Day in 1936 Edward VIII became the new King of UK after the death of his father George V. At the end of that year Edward VIII abdicated the throne due to his marriage to an American Divorcee named Wallis Simpson. George VI(present Queen Elizabeth's Father and Edwards younger brother) took over as king. In those times marrying a divorcee was frowned upon by the Church of England and Edward VIII was technically the head of the Church of England! I am not sure whats the position of the Church of England now on marrying a divorcee. Reply #1124. Jan 20 16, 2:57 AM |

Interesting observation, because if QEII abdicates, or dies her heir is Charles who is married to a divorcee. Maybe a good excuse to pass him over in favour of William his son. I wonder if Charlie thought of that when he got tangled up with the "Rottweiller"...LOL Reply #1125. Jan 20 16, 3:58 AM |

On this day, exactly 30 years ago, the Space Shuttle Challenger Blew up in mid air after just 73 seconds from lift off. There were no survivors from the crew of 7, which included a Mrs Christa McAuliffe. She was a 37 year old social studies teacher from New Hampshire, who was to become the 1st ordinary civilian going to space. She became a part of the crew by winning a competition. Due to this disaster, Nasa did not send astronauts into space for more than two years until the latter half of 1988. Reply #1126. Jan 28 16, 4:14 AM |

On this day in 52 BC, during the long siege at the Battle of Alesia, the leader of the Gauls, Vercingetorix, finally surrendered to Julius Caesar and the Roman army. (The Gauls had revolted under Roman rule) From their stronghold, the Gauls sent out their wives, children and the old and sick in order to save food for the siege. Hoping, in a peculiar case of wishful thinking, that Caesar would feed them. He didn't. It doesn't say what happened to them. Some were given to the soldiers as spoils of war (guess what that means), and the rest, one presumes, starved to death. At a later head on battle, most of the Gauls were slaughtered. Only a few managed to flee. Vercingetorix surrended to Caesar, was taken to Rome, held prisoner for five years, then paraded around as a trophy of war and the "great" Roman triumph under Caesar - before being strangled to death Reply #1134. From Wikipedia on this day in the year 610: "Heraclius was crowned Byzantine Emperor, having personally beheaded the previous emperor Phocas" That'd make some resume. Reply #1135. Oct 05 16, 5:34 AM |

If Julius Caesar was alive today he'd be charged as a war criminal. He wiped out or enslaved a vast number of Gauls just to enrich himself and enhance his reputation. My understanding is that those Gauls (women and children) outside the walls did starve to death. Caesar was both a brilliant general and a very ruthless man. Reply #1136. Oct 05 16, 11:55 AM |

On this day in 1944, suffrage for French women was granted. For a country that played such a large part in the Renaissance etc, France sure took its own sweet time in granting women the basic right to vote. Reply #1138. Oct 06 16, 4:54 AM |

On this day in 1927, the premier of the first talking movie "The Jazz Singer" took place. Starring the great Al Jolston, it tells the story of a young Jewish man who just wants to sing popular songs for a living, and the conflict, both internal and external, this creates for him.
