I love travelling by train. One of the nicest journeys I did was from the Kyle of Lochalsh (stopping off point for the Isle of Skye on the west coast of Scotland) to Inverness on the east coast. It was March. The scenery was beautiful with snow and deer on the hillsides but even then you could see trees that were suffering from acid rain. The train we went on was older than the one in the video with single compartments and slam doors. It was cosily heated, welcome warmth when coming out of the cold. The passengers were affable and the warmth made us sleepy. It was idyllic. This was before laptops, tablets and smartphones invaded our lives. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zNVLaZ1apWc Reply #22. "He has Aspergers Disorder and trains were his thing" I work with autistic children and it is quite common for them to be obsessed with trains. I love trains too. A few months ago, we did the Ghan from Darwin to Adelaide (across the continent from northern coast to southern coast). It was a wonderful trip. When I retire I would like to do the Orient Express. Can someone explain what people look for when they're train spotting? I travel by train a lot, but one time I was waiting on the platform for a while so I sat down. I quickly realised I'd sat in the middle of about 10 train spotters. Two freight trains came through the station while I was there. Some of the spotters had notebooks, and some took pictures. To me they just looked like dirty old freight trains. So what were the men looking for? Reply #28. Jun 18 17, 2:44 PM |

I'm not a train spotter but I know they look for the numbers on the trains which tells them what type of train it is and what exact train it is. There are lots of types of trains that run on different lines and I think they have listings of what those are, that they can tick off (or check off as Americans would say) to indicate they've seen them. I suppose their ultimate goal is to be able to say they've seen all of them. Reply #29. Jun 27 17, 7:32 AM |
