Subject: Turning Points of History

What do you assess to be major turning points in history? There are the obvious events, of course, like the signing of Magna Carta, the American Revolution, the French revolution, the establishment of the State of Israel, and so on, but what about other, less well-known events? I submit the Battle of the Plains of Abraham in Quebec on September 13, 1759 which saw Canada become a British colony, or the Battle of Bosworth Field on August 22, 1485 which brought Henry Tudor to the throne, ending 331 years of Plantagenet rule in England.

The destruction of the Library at Alexandria. Imagine the world if it wasn't destroyed.

4 April 1841:

John Tyler - first VP to succeed to the Presidency upon the death of a predecessor. It is perhaps not the most inportant event ever, but his stubbornness over the issue of whether VPs merely become an acting president or not certainly gave way for future successions (and a constitutional amendment).

If you're thinking 'So what?', consider the alternative. If he had not been so stubborn, the VP would've ended up being an acting president whenever the incumbent died, resigned or is otherwise removed from office. And the likes of Teddy Roosevelt or Harry S. Truman certainly would have been considered "acting president" when they succeeded.

SS- That's pretty funny. That makes me think of a great adult movie series idea for any budding film-makers out there: How historical figures were concieved. Episode 1: Alois comes home early with a bottle of peach schnapps.

In 48BC it was set fire to, and on several occasions after that it was gradually diminished through invasions of the city, and it was eventually destroyed in 391 by the order of Theophilus, a bishop of Alexandria.

A turning point in democracy in Modern Times would be the Roberts Court Supreme Court Decision to allow corporations and foreign governments to give any amount of money they want. While it might have been the case before, It is now a government by the corporation, of the corporation and for the corporation. There is no personal vote anymore.
The WALLSTREET PROTESTERS have it correct!

The Peace of Westphalia. When the Thirty Years War began, it was the final great conflict between the two arms of Western Christianity. By its end at Westphalia, religious alignments had broken down, and war was irrevocably "politics by other means" in the Western world. It's no great stretch to say that this treaty established secular society - as we know it - once and for all.

Bob, couldn't agree with you more. How does my vote compete with a million dollar donation to a political campaign? It don't, brother.

Winston Churchill surviving being hit by a car while visiting New York City in the 1920s. Without him to provide a bulwark of opposition to a British government bent on appeasing Hitler in the 1930s, and to encourage the British Empire to stand virtually alone in the war until Dec. 1941, the second world war may have had a very different outcome.

Using hindsight and Supposition a claim could be made that Germanys rise to Continental dominance has only been slightly delayed by Churchill’s efforts?
