Subject: Which language would you learn?

Posted by: Cymruambyth

In an increasingly global economy, it is an advantage to speak more than one language. My son, the IT specialist, has been learning Cantonese and Mandarin, the two major languages of China, because it will be useful to him in the expanding Asian market. Which language do you think it would be important for business people to learn?

I'd like to learn Mandarin, too. It's cool, I think.

American? It's now a language? I never knew that in all my years. Do the school systems know that?

I´m a brazilian, Portuguese spoken.Every child and adolescent, here, must learn English, French and Spanish cause Portuguese language is almost an island.I can understand these languages and read, Italian too. BUT writting and speaking are more difficult. I tryed to learn German and gave up. Now I´d like to learn GREEK. It´s so different and useless for me...

Where I live, nobody forces anybody to learn English. Instead, it would be "better" to learn their languages. So, if you want to go into business and live in Southern California, learn Spanish.

If I were learning for the business world it would be Mandarin, Arabic, Spanish, and/or Japanese.

At this time in my life I think it would be Japanese. This is probably so that I could talk to my daughter in law and we couls fully understand each other. Her English is good, but she misses the little nuances. If I could go back 50 years it would be German so I could have a real conversation with my mum's side of the family.

Except for Eglish, for me no other language is necessary to learn.

I speak Australian English, some French, a little Malay and a bit of Noongar (Indigenous Australian). Would like to improve my knowledge and ability in the latter two.

I have tried to learn to speak Spanish, but my tongue just doesn't want to work that way. I would love to learn German & Italian.

Spanish seems to be the language you need to know in the US. At least everything I see is in English/Spanish, like the recent voting ballot among other things.

Icelandic, so I can read the sagas in the original.
Mandarin because it sounds so pretty and I'd love to try a tonal language.

I already know Spanish. I know that Mandarin would probably make the most sense from a logical global business point of view, but I have always wanted to learn French or Italian.
