In the summer, I like cold soups like gazpacho and potage au concombre (cucumber soup). In the winter, I favor a warm soup like "fabada," from the Asturias region in the northern part of Spain. It's made with fava beans, olive oil, saffron, paprika, garlic, ham hock, and bacon, and it's often served with chorizo or morcilla (blood sausage) on the side. Talk about hearty! My mother used to do wonders with a can of tomato soup by adding in milk, butter, and sugar. I've never been able to duplicate her recipe, though. Wish I'd watched her make it more closely. Reply #2. My favorite soup is a clam chowder bread bowl from Splash Cafe in Pismo Beach, California. They even have mail order for the chowder. Best ever! Reply #3. Mar 02 10, 7:17 PM |

I like all kinds of soups! I do eat a lot of canned and instant soups, usually for a quick lunch when I'm at home (and the cup-a-soups also when I'm working, and taking lunch to work), and I also like nearly any soup, like from a deli or lunch counter. I'd say my favourites are probably broccoli cheddar (which I like hot and fresh from a deli counter - I'll use the canned version while cooking a dish, but I don't like it to just put in a bowl to eat), and this amazingly delicious thai chicken soup that I've only ever found in a the little sandwich shop that was inside the building I worked in over the summer/fall. In terms of homemade, my grandmother makes a really nice version of Italian Wedding Soup. My dad makes a good sausage & tortellini soup, but he's made it so often, I'm really tired of it. I don't have much experience making soup myself, though. I made a beef stew not too long ago, that only came out okay, and I made the ranch-style chicken chili from Rachael Ray's website just a couple weeks ago, but mine ended up looking a lot different from what she made on tv. Hers really looked like a chili, mine looked like soup with ground chicken in it. Which was fine, still tasted super yummy! Reply #4. Mar 02 10, 7:24 PM |

When I'm feeling sick, the first thing I want is cream of potato soup. Hot and sour sounds good, though, as does Tom Ghai, a Thai soup. Nothing beats a fine Chicago-hot-dog soup, though.... (Just kidding, Sasha!) Reply #9. Mar 02 10, 10:17 PM |

xbunny, Marmite and Vegemite are both yeast extract pastes. Do you have Loblaw's in Quebec? You should be able to find it there. It's usually with the packaged and canned gravies. Look for a squat brown jar with a yellow lid. I also use Marmite when I make French Onion Soup. Reply #10. Mar 02 10, 11:40 PM |

Hot dog soup? Oh, no. Hey, at least it wasn't Vienna sausage soup. Just visualizing that one makes me want to... I need to be excused. Reply #14. Mar 03 10, 11:03 AM |

I donĀ“t know about Vienna sausage soup, but there is Frankfurter Soup with lentils, beef and - sausages (frankfurters). Quite delicious. Reply #16. Mar 03 10, 11:50 AM |

Vienna sausage soup would probably be fine; it's just that the sausages are packed, at least in this country, in a viscous liquid. Frankfurter soup sounds interesting, and the fact that it contains lentils highly recommends it! Reply #17. Mar 03 10, 12:20 PM |

I like to think I'm a "citoyenne du monde" just because I'm a polyglot, but this thread has begun to show me that I'm not so open to adventure (culinary, this time) as I thought I was. Thank you all for the enlightenment. __________ I've made borscht but could use a few hints on serving it, and I'd like to try preparing sauerkraut soup, if someone can suggest how to do so. My own home made Sweet Potato with unsalted Bacon, a real tasty winter filler, although it's murder on the old blender. Reply #20. Mar 04 10, 12:22 PM |
