Subject: Jo´s Language Corner

Hi. I don´t mean to start a blog as my life is quite well-ordered and slightly boring. Anyway, I have been learning English for many years and I still come across problems. I´d like to use your knowledge of native-borns and I´d be glad if you could help me in some language problems.

"Post" is absolutely wrong.
Unless .... It is asking about where the person attached to the dot is posting to an online forum.

Maybe. Possibly. And that is stretching it. Does the teacher's book give explanations of why an answer is correct? Or perhaps the textbook publisher has a website that explains the answers?

And an American wouldn't refer to a place of work as a "post" unless they are referring to someone in the military.

Or a nurse, government official, teacher, or clerk. It has the sense of being "stationed" somewhere, and people might use it ironically, but in my experience it's fairly common.

I've worked as a teacher and adjunct professor. Never have I heard anyone describe the job as a "post" in normal speech.

"I have the post Literature for the 8th grade this year."
While that job deserves combat pay, no matter where it is, it's not commonly called a "post".
The jobs can be offered by posting the opening, and you can get a posting, but it's not called a "post" once you get it.

Well, the students, who are digital native, answered "post"!
Like the post on facebook. So, that´s that.

Never mind the answer, the question is wrong! Loopt mapping service gives you information on your friends' pysical location (whereabouts) as well as their internet activity (posts).

I really love Nick Cave´s Oh Children, although I don´t know what it is about. I somehow feel it´s something important. Is anybody able to explain this song to me?

O Children"

Pass me that lovely little gun
My dear, my darling one
The cleaners are coming, one by one
You don't even want to let them start

They are knocking now upon your door
They measure the room, they know the score
They're mopping up the butcher's floor
Of your broken little hearts

O children

Forgive us now for what we've done
It started out as a bit of fun
Here, take these before we run away
The keys to the gulag

O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
Children
Rejoice, rejoice

Here comes Frank and poor old Jim
They're gathering round with all my friends
We're older now, the light is dim
And you are only just beginning

O children

We have the answer to all your fears
It's short, it's simple, it's crystal clear
It's round about and it's somewhere here
Lost amongst our winnings

O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
Children
Rejoice, rejoice

The cleaners have done their job on you
They're hip to it, man, they're in the groove
They've hosed you down, you're good as new
They're lining up to inspect you

O children

Poor old Jim's white as a ghost
He's found the answer that we lost
We're all weeping now, weeping because
There ain't nothing we can do to protect you

O children
Lift up your voice, lift up your voice
Children
Rejoice, rejoice

Hey little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We're happy, Ma, we're having fun
And the train ain't even left the station

Hey, little train! Wait for me!
I once was blind but now I see
Have you left a seat for me?
Is that such a stretch of the imagination?

Hey little train! Wait for me!
I was held in chains but now I'm free
I'm hanging in there, don't you see
In this process of elimination

Hey little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We're happy, Ma, we're having fun
It's beyond my wildest expectation

Hey little train! We are all jumping on
The train that goes to the Kingdom
We're happy, Ma, we're having fun
And the train ain't even left the station

I´d like to ask teachers of English as a Foreign Language (or anybody). Are your pupils allowed to use words like "gotta", "wanna", "outta", etc., even if the task is "An informal letter" essay?

Even in an informal letter or an email I've never seen gotta or wanna. It seems people tend to write more formally than they speak.

Thanks. The pupils watch series like How I met your mother or The Big Bang Theory etc. where they hear people talking like that. Imitating them they feel sooo "cool". :)

Can you help me? I am looking for the title of a TV film which I saw in about 1983. It was a thriller or a horror, probably Australian and probably black and white.

There was a couple whose car broke down near a field. The man went for help and the woman stayed in the car. On the field there was a house in ruins and a scarecrow. Later she found out there was a dead corpse of a man in the scarecrow. There was a weird boy in the house who told her that the man was his father and that he killed him because the father slapped him. "He shouldn´t have done that", said the boy. Later the boy threatens the woman with a snake and she slaps him. "You shouldn´t have done that", says the boy and now we know that the woman is in danger.

Meanwhile something happens to her husband - he injures his leg or gets a light heart attack, I don´t remember exactly.

Does anybody remember this film? I would be very thankful for your help. The film can´t be older then 1983 and I don´t know exactly if it was Australian and black and white.
