Subject: Children in Restaurants

Posted by: Cymruambyth

A restaurant in Pennsylvania has banned children under the age of six as guests. As one who has often had a quiet meal with friends interrupted by toddlers running around and screaming babies making their displeasure known, I'm in favour of more restaurants enacting a similar ban. I'd set the bar at higher than six - say, 10 or 12.

There are more than enough kid-friendly restaurants around (admittedly not of the white tablecloth variety) catering to small humans who have no manners, and that's where parents should take their children until they have reached the age at which they can dine out without disturbing everyone else in the restaurant.

Whether or not the restaurant in Pennsylvania was high-end or low-end is immaterial. It is a business, and if the management of a business experiences problems with a sector of the populace because of the way they behave or dress or for any other reason, they have every right to place a ban on them entering the premises.

I don't know about your hometown, but during our short Canadian prairie summer, most restaurants here post signs reading "No shoes, no shirt, no service". Every bar has a bouncer ready and able to eject obnoxious customers, and I was at a very plush restaurant recently with friends when a gaggle of loud adult patrons (so loud one couldn't hear the music played by the jazz combo we had come to hear) were politely - and forcefully - asked to leave by the maitre d'.

All this serves to remind why it is I only eat out if no other option available.

I like the idea of different restaurants having different patrons. I'd like warning signs with a star rating.
Number of annoying egocentric Yuppies with mobiles this month
Number of pretentious twits ordering in loud voices and being patronising to the staff
Number of annoying children running about
Number of....you get the idea.
Then you could choose your establishment according to your preferences. As I do when they post the menu and prices outside.

C30 - that is pretty much how my family feels too. It's more fun at home, you can laugh without disturbing anyone and if someone, accidently, spills something...it isn't a big deal.

daymare............and the best of all........no annoying brats running amok............ahh, peace, perfect peace.
Well not quite "peace", one has to ignore the baleful looks from ever the optimist cats. I'll settle for that though!

Brats? Are you referring to the children or the adults?

To my daughter's delight, brat means brother in Russian.

Jabberwok, I'll bet your son isn't anywhere near as delighted as your daughter.

I like your rating system, by the way. It might also include 'number of obnoxious teenagers who think it is fun to engage in food fights', 'the number of elderly ladies haggling over who had what on the bill', and 'what kind of music is on the Muzak loop'.

I like your comments Jabberwok. Lately I find people with a cell phone glues to their ear to be a greater disturbance than kidlets running amok. My experience has been that in general, the patrons of a high end restaurant want decorum... including the parents who keep their kids well behaved and at their own table.

Sorry I didn't come across this question before, but six weeks later, I'd like to comment. I think it's sad that parents don't teach their children good manners when they are young. If more of them did, we wouldn't have the problem -- and I do know how you feel. I sat in a restaurant where a kid about 11 or 12 years old kept whining that he didn't want this and he didn't want that and the parents kept reminding him that he had ordered those things. Then they gave into him and ordered something else for him and the whole thing started over again.

I agree with this idea and if I ran a restaurant, I'd do the same thing. There are times when children can cause problems. I've been in many restaurants over the years and I've seen kids screaming and running around as if they're at the local playground. In my own personal opinion, it's dangerous to let your kids treat a restaurant like it's a place to play. There are people coming out of the kitchens with plates of hot food and if there's a kid running around, someone could end up getting hurt.

ElusiveDream – on March 14 you resurrected an old thread from November 2016 called “Children in Pubs and Restaurants”. On March 19, you resurrected this thread, “Children in Restaurants”, which has been inactive since September 2011. What is the purpose in resurrecting two inactive threads on the same topic?

I can't understand that either. It's one thing to resurrect an old thread, quite another to restart two on the same topic - please don't do that.

This thread, the shorter and newer of the two, is now locked.
