I have thought about this hundreds of times over the last 12 years, ever since I discovered my love of architecture and design (finally made read my dream of being an architect in June...now going into engineering instead, but anyway....). My ideal changes all the time. A few things they all have in common: a large library full of books (like the Morgan Library in NYC, or Beauty & the Beast library), a grand staircase, that turns back on itself (goes up in the middle, landing, continues up on either side coming back at 180 degrees, hope that makes sense), and a 360 degree, second floor covered porch. Everything else changes with each new design. Reply #21. Sep 06 12, 12:08 PM |

Old fashioned log cabin with new-fangled appliances in kitchen and large bath with whirlpool tub set in fieldstone and picture window overlooking a forest view in the mountains. Huge cozy room with fieldstone fireplace, large hearth for my dogs: Irish Wolfhound, Great Dane, German Shepherd, St. Bernard and Norwegian Elkhound, who get along very well with all the cats as they have their own trainer. Huge tracts of wooded land, a stream, wrap around deck, artist's studio with glass ceiling running into window. Chauffeur has own cottage of his/her design, same with other helpers, and they inherit same on my death...I have thought this through! I have a personal shopper {I detest shopping}, and some wonderful soul to do all the paperwork! The house and furnishings are built ruggedly and for comfort - anywhere you sit you should be able to put your feet up. Warm colors and a casual atmosphere. Reply #22. Sep 06 12, 12:55 PM |

I'd have a Tudor style house (with the pitched roof and timber). Sigh. Reply #24. Dec 16 12, 7:44 PM |

I'm with Alexis, but something after the style of the log cabin shown in Bonanza. I loved that, no modern knick knacks as that would spoil the atmosphere. LOL Reply #25. Dec 16 12, 8:50 PM |

A Swiss chalet. I visited one once and fell in love. It was light and airy and smelled delicious. Being near the top of a mountain would discourage visitors too. Perfection Reply #26. Dec 22 12, 4:40 PM |

I already have my dream home. A 17th century cottage here in Devon. Beams, inglenooks and a fireplace big enough to stand up in. Stable door with roses, wisteria and honeysuckle growing over the outside... Perfect! Reply #27. Dec 22 12, 6:08 PM |

I used to dream about living in a castle, but now I'd much rather own a nice large penthouse somewhere in the city center :) Reply #30. Dec 19 13, 5:39 PM |

I would have a huge tree-house with scramble nets, ladders and bridges. Oh, and slides. And a bar, obviously! Reply #31. Sep 15 15, 7:38 PM |

I love Georgian houses - the proportions, the roominess, the features and the light. There would need to be a garden big enough to grow flowers and vegetables, have a big lawn and some trees, sheds, greenhouses and a Summer House. It would need to be situated in or near a city or town but also not far from countryside. It would have a nice big entrance hallway and library. Reply #32. Oct 14 15, 7:54 AM |

My house would be open, airy and light, chef's kitchen, a cosy coffee corner or three, my library in a tower, big windows and verandah all round. And and orchard and Really Big garden - and not a gum tree within sight! Reply #35. Oct 18 15, 10:07 PM |

A big old Queenslander, lovely wide verandah all the way round, wrought iron rails and trimmings, tin roof to hear the rain, fireplace, polished wood floors, filled with old fashioned furniture - and a lovely old garden full of large, shady trees and white statues. Reply #37. Nov 05 15, 4:16 AM |

My dream house would be four bedrooms and a glass sun room for my cats. It would have a huge play room for grandkids and an indoor and outdoor pool. It would have a barn and stable for horses and a garden plot. Since it's my dream home, I would want it to be self-cleaning too. Reply #38. Apr 14 16, 9:24 PM |

If I got my dream house I'd like to visit other people's dream houses and for them to visit mine in a kind of house swap arrangement (not compulsory or course). Reply #39. Nov 25 16, 6:05 AM |
